Darla,

My 8 year old had pertussis several years ago. In fact, everyone in

the family had it. Colin got it from a fully vaccinated friend who had

a "cough". Colin only had 3 rounds of pertussis shots because he had a

horrible arthus reaction to his last dose. At times he coughed so hard

that he vomited. His asthma flared and he was quite sick for nearly a

month (for the longest time the doctor just thought it was his asthma).

I think it is the pertussis toxin that causes the horrible cough. If

the infection is treated in the early stage--theoretically there would

be less bacteria around to release toxin. Pertussis has three

stages--catarrhal (cold like symptoms), paroxysmal (whoop like coughing

is present), and convalescent stage (coughing is better but not gone).

I will keep your family and especially your little ones, Asenath and

Zipporrah, in my prayers,

Darla, How scary for you guys!!! I will certainly keep you in my prayers and hope that Ase and Porrah get thru this illness alright. Do you use a nebulizer with Ase? I just got one for Chlesea and notice a big difference between inhaled albuterol and the nebulizer. She has much more productive coughs. I am not sure if that is something that can be done with an infant. Also, I found a great homeopathic cough syrup called Chestal cough relief. It can be given every 2 hrs, so it does not last long, but it did work very well with Chelsea, it stopped the coughing and thinned her mucous so she could sleep. I bought this at a health food store. Again, I am not sure if it is ok for infants. But it is safe to use with other meds (which is why I got it for Chelsea).

Hang in there!!

Darla,

I am just trying to get caught up on some of my emails since I have been gone to St. Louis with Audrey and Amie most of the week. I am so sorry to hear the kids are having suck a bad time of it. Pertussis is not something to be taken lightly. Hopefully since Asenath was already on antibiotics and Porrah started taking them neither of them will be to bad. I will pray for them and the rest of your family to be well so you can make your trek to Mayo this next week.

Thinking and praying for all of you,

Kathy, grandma to Audrey, 29mos

Darla, Praying that the antibiotics start working soon. Pertussis

is the one virus we were told as teachers to be aware of. We have a

good number of immigrants in our building. One doc even said that

we shouldn't worry about the flu vaccine but to make sure we are all

up to date on the pertussis. It scares me a little since I have not

vaccinated Wyatt for it because we were told the seizures would come

on a lot worse. I hope things get better for you guys.

positive. Zipporrah just barely is showing cold symptoms and began

antibiotics yesterday. Does anybody know how good of a chance she

has to NOT get bad with this since she started the medicine before

coughing began? The doctors told us that after 3 days on meds we

aren't contagious any longer so it is still ok for us to go to Mayo

this next week and was ok today as well because Asenath was the only

coughing one and had been on antibiotics for 5 days already. I

still want to get together with the 4 families that will be at Mayo

in the next two weeks but will understand if you would rather keep

your distance. Just let us know. Please pray for our children

though as the older ones have struggled so much with this and the

little ones are just beginning the coughing phase. Hopefully with

the meds they will not get too bad. I am so worried about Asenath

and Porrah. I can't bear to think of them struggling for breath and

Asenath has already had a stroke episode affecting her right side of

her mouth two days ago due to the virus. I don't know how much her

system can take.
