Guest guest
Mc’s Corporation used to offer grants to schools for gym equipment. It’s worth a try. Sue grants for accessible playground equipment My children's school is planning to apply for grants for arts and sports. I am going to be working on the grants, and I would like to see the school apply for grants to put in accessible playground equipment for that children of ALL abilities could use. I want equipment that would be fun and challenging for kids in wheelchairs, for kids with issues that cause milder incoordination or weakness, and still be challenging/fun for kids with great physical abilities. The idea here is equipment that encourages play between children of various ability levels, creating bonds and fostering social skills all of the kids will need as adults. We have one park like that in town - now we just need to incorporate some of the same ideas into the school yards, so kids have those opportunities each day at school. The thing I need to do right now is find out what grants are available that might help with this, so we can pursue them. If you know of anything, please let me know. Thanks! Lynne nprw@... Please contact mito-owner with any problems or questions.

Guest guest
Hi Lynne: Glad to hear that you are going to do this. We just got done after three years of planning and one and a half years of fundraising of dedicating our 95% accessbile playground. The biggie besides the equipment is the surfacing. We used a company called Child Safe Products Inc. Cottone is the guy to contact. His number is and their fax is (608) 935-2859. Give him my name as to how you got his name. He did over 14,000 square feet of surfacing for us. Very reasonable price and extremely knowledable in his field. Can't say enough about him and the company he works for. As for grants not quite sure yet. But we got some money through the Reeve Foundation. We got our dollar donations from companies in the community and also we have a Community Foundation here in Appleton that they have several grants for the community to apply for. Do you have any thing like that in your area? A friend and I who were on the steering committee for our playground do some consulting on playgrounds. Helping with ideas for fundraising ideas, and especially the equipment. We researched I don't know how many catalogs on equipment and the surfacing. I know this is for a school; but I LOVE the fact that you are doing this. That is my next goal now; to start having schools have equipment and surfacing for kids to actually play on the playground and not just sit in the wheelchair. There are many neat play panels to do things on and swings. How large is your community and school? Good luck and way to go for doing this. Do you have an Easter Seals in your area that could help with this? Nerenhausen mom to Leah Lynne wrote: > My children's school is planning to apply for grants for arts and > sports. Guest guest
Thanks for your response!! I'm glad to hear someone else has done something similar! :-) Right now I'm looking at the Reeve Paralysis Foundation, and also the Mc House Charities. I haven't looked at Easter Seals yet but I plan to, and of course there are a lot of corporations here that we could talk to. I'm feeling like the grant part is going to be do-able. Now I just have to decide exactly what to ask for! :-) One thing I learned yesterday - my children's school is supposed to be torn down and replaced, and they will be attending a different school for a couple of years. I was thinking at first that maybe we should focus on training for integrating kids of all abilities into the PE/sports program. But after seeing how long it took to get your playground in place - I think maybe we need to do BOTH at the same time - so the new playground can be in place along with the new buildings. Thanks so much for sharing your experience. I need to dash off and get the kids ready for school right now but I will look over your post some more later today and get some new directions to look in, including the person you mentioned as a contact. I hope we can stay in touch, I would love to be able to get talk to someone here and there who has been-there-done-that! Lynne

Guest guest
Lynne: I looked through my notes and remembered that I believe the Mcdonald Corp. (at least in Wisconsin) doesn't do grants for playgrounds. I remember asking the director of a Mc House in Madison when I was there. She said that they don't do that sort of stuff any more. I believe their grants go to something else. But hey it's worth a shot. Now the reason it took so long for our playground is because of the size of the playground. I don't think you are going to have a 14,000 square foot playground for a school playground. If you do, wow, double wow. Our playground cost about $300,000. May be a little more because of an error from a playground company we were dealing with. Any way ours is a large playground, but the best part is I was at the playground on Sunday and some one who didn't even know I was on the committee said wow, what a neat playground. I said thank you and then explained why I said thank you. She was so impressed with the playground and was hoping that " able " bodied kids didn't take it over if any disabled kids were needing the playground. I said that parents are pretty aware of kids on the playground and would make sure that " everybody " got to play fairly on the playground. I believe our website is Universalplayground.org. I will double check and you can look up some information on that. I know my friend and I would love to share our experience with you. Where do you live? Good luck and keep me posted. I think that is true. I was thinking of asking for them for a grant that would provide training on integrating all ability levels for PE and sports, at the elementary level. They only do small grants - like $1,000-5,000 - but I figured that would be plenty for training like that. That sort of training also seemed to fit in with awards they made in Utah last year. Now I'm trying to figure out where we would get someone to do that sort of training, but I'm not finding anything so far. > Now the reason it > took so long for our playground is because of the size of the playground. I'm still guessing it will take the full 2 years to get the playground funded and built though, since it will be going through the school district. I need to see what they have already planned, for starters, and see what will need to be changed (wouldn't it be awesome if they have already planned for this - but I doubt it, judging from all the latest school playgrounds I've seen). > I believe our website is Universalplayground.org.
