Tamara,

My kids love the water. We have a pool, we just make sure that there are plenty of floats in the water with them that if they tire they can reach one. When they were little we used the bathing suit that had a float built into it. Dr. Boles had told us that it was great exercise and because it was non weight bearing it wasn't as hard on the muscle.

Tamara,

Emilie did have trouble with pool therapy, but it was because the therapy

center where she went kept their pool very warm (over 90 degrees F, I

think), and Emilie's mito makes her intolerant of heat.

hi tamara,

just to let you know our experience...my daughter's physical

therapist use to do water therapy with her once a week and it was

great! (anna grace is nonambulatory, and therefore it was very

theraputic....so our situation may differ from yours) it did tire

her out, but a good tiring out!

also, we joined our community pool last season, b/c anna grace loves

water so much.....it is much more tiring on me than her.

so, our water experiences have been very positive.

hope this helps.

did very well with pool therapy when she was not in a pool that was to warm. If it was to warm she only lasted a few minutes. But she did very well and loved it. She gets in so much pain doing land exercises but in the pool you are weightless and it really cuts the pain issues.

Best of luck to you and yours,

Tamara, Water activity is great for people with muscle and tone issues. The water provides stability and support. My daughter is very sedentary and has a mixture of low and high tone, she also does not bear weight and has trouble reaching to midline. When we put her in a pool, she straightens her legs and attempts to bear weight and even tries to make walking motions, she also will pull her hands to midline and make paddling motions.

The only danger is if your child has temp regulation problems, being exposed to water can cause the body temperature to drop dramatically. Some use wet or dry suits to help. This subject has been discussed a lot in the past, it might be worth looking in the archives. HTH
