Tamara, has started any new meds? My daughter was dx'd with severe silent aspiration at 2 1/2 but did not start getting sick until she started phenobarbitol, which worsened her swallow.

Tamara,

This is something we deal with a lot also. We use Thick-it to thicken

everything Will drinks, or he to aspirates or gets a really rattly sound for

an hour or so after drinking. We tried using cereal, but found it didn't

uniformly thicken the drinks, and Will didn't like it. The Thick-it works

really well, but can be expensive.

We also find with Will that there are times that no matter how much we

thicken Will still doesn't swallow well. We just go as thick as we can and

increase his respiratory meds till it gets better. Right now we are going

on 4 weeks of super thick. It just varies from day to day.

We have been told that Will's reflux does make things worse, because the

airway is already irritated and they are pretty sure his Asthma/RAD is

realted to constant aspiration.

I know with Will it is just a sign of his muscles not working well, and that

is partly why it tends to vary. We've been told to do the best we can, and

that other than putting in a G-tube there is not much else to do.

I hope that helps, if you have any other questions just post or email me

directly.
