Crossbite

I've noticed that most of the people who post here have both upper

and lower surgery. Is that because underbites are more common or

because both jaws are out of whack? Also, has anyone else been told

that they have a crossbite? I have a 10mm overbite and also a

crossbite (my molars don't even touch on the left side) and my

orthodontist is only recommending lower surgery at this time. I

haven't seen an oral surgeon yet.

Thanks!

Hi Sue,

I had both upper and lower, but did not have an underbite. I had an

openbite, sort of like an overbite. I've read of many folks here who

have had both jaws done for the open/overbite. Once one jaw is

realigned, many times the other needs to be realigned in order to

have a perfect fit. Meaning that to have a functional proper bite,

where your teeth meet properly, some folks need both jaws done. Many

here have only had one jaw done (many lower only) and it's great if

your surgeon recommends just one for you! So it just depends on how

your jaws are preop and what they can do with braces beforehand, then

the surgeon will decide how many jaws need correction. I don't know

much about crossbites but I'm sure someone else here will respond!

Good luck in your jaw journey!
