Guest guest
, Although I no longer have my braces on, I do remember those very discouraging first few weeks. Although I know it may seem like you won't get used to the bands, you will. I had a huge issue with biting my cheeks and having them cut into my lips. It actually went away for me around 3-4 weeks. It's definitely tolerable because in the long run, think of the other worse pain that could come from NOT have this surgery done. Hope this helps! Guest guest
hi ! AHHH ! How I feel your pain sista! I too had a crossbite/underbite thing going on before my surgery and I remember the pain. My Ortho told me when I first complained of sores and discomfort - that your mouth builds up calluses to deal with the rubbing. He was right. Here's something else to remember: I had my surgery a month ago - with VERY little pain. This week, I went to the ortho and they put in new wires and bands. OH THE PAIN!!!! The next day, when I saw my surgeon - he said - see - your orthodontist hurts you more than I do! He was so right. Just remember, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. And there are people here who feel your pain. And if you're really concerned about pain/discomfort issues, don't be afraid to talk to your ortho about them. Guest guest
I think it's not at all unusual. But I also think you should call your ortho's office and tell them what you've told us. Can you not get the wax to help relieve the pain at all? Or are you struggling to make it stay put? Silicone helps some folks more than wax does. There are usually things called cleats on the labial (tongue) side of the bands. These may be what are biting into your tongue. My ortho told me at the start that if anything troubled my tongue I should let him know. The cleats did, and he promptly ground them off. Actually, he was able soon after we started to cement the brackets directly to the molars, in most cases, and he worked with those until we got into the heavier wires, at which point the brackets popped off. (These were teeth with crowns, which complicates everything.) Then he replaced the bands. Without the cleats. He told me that he'd thought he might need the cleats for elastics, to treat my cross bite. but it was a year or more before he started any elastics at all... and by that time, he found he didn't need the cleats after all. In any case, he said, " There are other things we can do. " I'm just as glad I didn't have to learn about those other things. ;~) Your mouth will toughen up, if you are at all typical. In the meantime, warm saltwater rinses or using a product called amosan may be helpful. I'm sorry you're hurting. I do think that, if you can put up with it for a time, it will get better. Three days is not a very long time to find out how you feel with all that new stuff in your mouth. And everything, to me anyhow, feels enormous when it first goes in. I felt as though I had a mouthful of carpet tacks, or fishhooks. But I did get beyond it. Hope you will, too. Do ask your orthodontist for help, and be sure to mention that it's your tongue at issue. I'm sure you're not the first patient who's had a tough time of it getting used to the gear. It may well be there's something simple the doc can do to help. If you get brushed off -- well, to me that would be a warning sign. A caring doc should be just exactly that. Guest guest
I still have mine on and that is exactly what happened to me. Even after my teeth stopped hurting something was gouging into my tongue and it constantly hurt. That made it harder to eat than anything. I had this weird thing in the top and that kept cutting it or something, i dunno but it hurt and made it impossible to eat. Don't worry, mine eventually went away, but if it hurts longer than maybe a week or two then u should probably call ur orthodontist and ask him or her to help u out. Guest guest
Nooooo. Don't wait for a week or two. Ask now. The worst that can happen is that the doc says, " Wait for a week or two. " There are steps they can take to help you not hurt so much. Guest guest
Thanks for the advice everyone; it's nice to know that I (at least) am not having an atypical reaction or something. Funny thing is... almost one day after I posted the message, I am already feeling tremendously better. What a differance a day makes -- at the risk of sounding like a cheesy commercial (don't remember which one that was?) In any case, I appreciate all the encouragement; and Cammie, I will in fact call the ortho. this week to see if he can help. You're absolutely right: it doesn't hurt to ask! After all, I didn't write out that horrifically large check last week for nothing. By the way . . . where can I find silicone to use? I am having problems getting the wax to stick. Guest guest
Thanks for the advice everyone; it's nice to know that I (at least) am not having an atypical reaction or something. Funny thing is... almost one day after I posted the message, I am already feeling tremendously better. Guest guest
, I see you've already got a ton of replies, but I wanted to add my thoughts. When I first got my braces on the lower bands in the back would absolutely tear into my tongue. It took until midway through my first change before I adjusted to them, and during that time wax was my best friend. Cover the parts that are causing you grief with wax. And, don't hesitate to go back to your ortho to see if there are any minor adjustments that can be made.
