Guest guest
Carol, I had surgery in Dec. due to a previous accident. I had my splint out and bands removed 2 weeks ago and right away I was like, Hey, look how wide I can open! My surgeon, along with his staff, looked at me kind of sadly and said, ahhh, yeah, that will get better. And I was thinking, what? Didn't I just open really wide?? So I looked in the mirror and well, I was barely open! However, 2 weeks out now, I can almost fit three fingers in there, with lots of exercising and chewing etc..it'll take a while but you'll get there. As for braces being removed, I keep mine on till June so I'm not sure how that feels..Alix-- In orthognathicsurgerysupport , " carolandbilly " wrote: > Hello to the group. Guest guest
Hi Carroll! I too have suffered a broken jaw, only mine was caused by my dentist when he extracted my wisdom tooth last May. I have had multiple surgeries due to bone infections in what is left of my jaw. The last surgery I had was to remove the metal bar in which the screws loosened and caused yet another infection. I was wired shut for 3 weeks, and just had the wires removed a couple of weeks ago. It shouldn't take too long for you to be able to close and open your mouth normally. Most of what you are experiencing right now is muscular. The muscles in the face are very large and remember you haven't used them in a while. As far as getting your arch bars (braces) removed, it isn't painful just a lot of tugging and pulling. They took my frist set off right in the office, it took about 15 minutes. I am having my 4th surgery on the 17th of March, this time they are doing bone grafting because I have hardly any bone left and what is left is of poor quality. I will be wired shut once again for a minimum of 3 weeks! YUCK! Good luck to you and let me know how things go! Linnette

Guest guest
I know some folks have had lots of pain when having braces removed (are you sure it's braces, and not arch bars you're talking about?) but honestly, I had no pain at all. I've never, ever been fond of the grinding sounds that big burr thing makes, and they did have to use it to get rid of some of the cement, but otherwise it was, as my ortho promised, " a piece of cake. " For me at least. Apparently the fates decided, mercifully, just to be kind to me in all matters orthodontic. (Except for making me wear the danged braces twice and have the surgery at all.) I hope your experience will be more like mine than like the more painful ones. Cammie > A local?
