Guest guest
I can only tell you that I decidedly have my pop's jaw and underbite, and V-shaped upper (at least until my docs worked on it) and propensity for decay. My mom never had a cavity until way into adulthood. All you'd have to do to know that is look at the photos and my dental records. Sigh. BUT, my mom had the propensity for obesity... I am a fat woman, alas, in a long line of fat women, which makes that problem damn tough to lick. And all you have to do to know that is to look at photographs of the two of us, plus my grandma and aunts... Deep sigh... All things considered, I'd rather have had my pop's body structure and my mom's teeth, but my genes didn't let me choose. Triple sigh... At least I got some of both their brains, and their sensitivities, and for both I am truly, truly grateful. Soooo... You win, even when you lose. Cammie Sigh. > I was wondering if our bad jaws are hereditary? I'm 10 months into > my braces, and probably 4 months pre-op. Guest guest
It can definitely be hereditary. I was unlucky enough to get my dad's jaw, and he had essentially the same jaw problem I had (underbite). He had the surgery to correct it back in the 60's, and from what he tells me the surgeon who performed it was one of the early pioneers in the field and helped develop the procedure (was out of Chicago). There weren't many doctors doing the surgery back then becuase it was risky and not many were knowledgable enough about how ot perform it. Anyway, my dentist/orthodonist and surgeon both recognize the similarity between my dad's bite and mine (from pictures I've seen his was worse though). In fact, many males on my dad's side seem to have a more prominent jaw, while not necessarily an underbite (which isn't necessarily a bad thing for guys, as that is usually a desired feature). So yes, it can be passed on, but I am sure that there are many cases where it was simply chance. As a side note, I get my wires off sometime in the coming week (had the surgery Dec. 18), so I'm excited to say the least . > I was wondering if our bad jaws are hereditary? Guest guest
In my own personal observations, yes, bad jaws are hereditary. My uncle has a bad underbite. My dad has an underbite. Both my brother and I went through surgeries to correct our underbites. So, I'm going to go ahead and say, yeah, it's hereditary! > I was wondering if our bad jaws are hereditary?
