Guest guest
Hi, My name is Lorie and I am having surgery on Tuesday on my lower jaw to correct my overbite. I am grateful that I found this site. I printed off all of the information from Sharon's site and can't wait to read it. I think lots of my worries and concerns can be answered right here. Guest guest
Dear Lorie You have made a wise decision. I am now 7 days post surgery and am so grateful that I made the decision to have my surgery. It is a difficult recovery . . not surgery. A good hospital, surgeon and recovery staff made the first part easy. I was so tired of years and years of a no profile face. I have worn braces for 3 years and planned for this surgery 3 years ago. This is the final phase of my new smile, bite and life. Thank God. I love my profile now . . everyday is getting better. Be prepared for the following: 1. 72 hours after surgery ( I, too, had my lower jaw extended - cut in two places on either side of the jaw and had my own chin cut and extended) I blew like a blow fish. My cheeks stretched so much, I looked like a baloon ready to explode. It was very comical. Laugh as you can't do much else! 2. Don't get too dependent on the pain medication. Truly, there is not much pain, just swelling and the codine or morphine has its own set backs. Use only what you need the first 72 hours and then try to taper off, using meds only at night. DO take your antibiotic until finished! 3. Drink, lots and lots of liquids! Get that anesthisia out of your system! I am so grateful that I had no vomiting as my mouth has been wired shut with a splint! Tell the anesthisiologist if you are suseptible to motion sickness . . this will make a difference in how they recover you after surgery. 5. If you are as vain as I am (sorry), take along a wonderful scarf or wrap for your head and face, along with some great Jakie O sunglasses. When I left the hospital, I looked mysterious as opposed to the comical blowfish. 6. Have liquids ready at home! Water, juice (low acidity) and lots of creamed soups. The bullion soups are okay but too salty and that did not go well after surgery with my stomach. It is now 7 days since my surgery. Life is about 65% normal. I should also share that only 5 days post surgery, I went on a formal job interview for wonderful job. I decided to keep the interview date and I e-mailed them ahead of time to ask that they have a computer ready with a large screen as a result of my temporary disablity. I also wrapped my face in a wonderful Bananna Republic Scarf - a little mid eastern look! The interview went great . . not to mention that I fit really well in my suit as I dropped 11 lbs (not that I encourage this type of diet!). Good luck on your surgery!! You will be fine. Don't panic when you see your large face or when your mouth is closed! Do have family support when you get home. This is very, very helpful! > Hi, > My name is Lorie and I am having surgery on Tuesday on my lower jaw > to correct my overbite. I am grateful that I found this site. Guest guest
Thank you for your encouragement. I didn't realize that the recovery was going to be so drastic. I must say that I was sick to my stomach Friday after reading the intro to this group. It sounds like we are having the same surgery and have traveled the same road. I've had my braces on for 4 years. It didn't seem like this was ever going to really happen. My surgery's tomorrow morning. Fortunately, I have lots of family and support. I'm glad to hear that the pain from the surgery isn't as bad as I was expecting. I think I'm going to really happy that I have found this support group. I can't beleive how many postings are in my mail box. I guess that you guys can answer any questions that I might have. Thanks so much for your response. Wish me luck!
