Guest guest
I don't see that anybody has answered you about splints, . So I'll give it a try. In this context, a splint is a small piece of acryllic or some sort of rigid plastic (but like anything else newly installed in the mouth, it doesn't seem small. Mine felt about the size of a frisbee!) that's wired into the upper brace. (A few folks have 'em down below, too, but not many. A few folks have splints that are removable, but not many. A few folks have none at all, but not many.) The wires, on top of the braces, are quite lovely -- large, twisty Xs on every tooth to hold the thing snugly in place. In my case, the thing was about the size of a half dollar, more or less. It had a groove for my lower teeth, which felt like a ditch. It fit behind and below my upper teeth, and stayed in there for seven long weeks. (When they took it out, my surgeon's tech advised her helper, who was just learning about such things, " Now when I take it out, the best thing I can advise you is to just hold your breath! " ) It shows the teeth and muscles where they need to be, and helps guide the lower jaw into the proper relationship. And, as my surgeon put it, " helps keep things from bouncing all over creation.
