Guest guest
I'm considering having a lower jaw surgery. I have an appointment scheduled for this wednesday. I read a lot in the internet and peoples experineces here in this group about the relapse. I'm really scared. Exactly what causes it does anyone know? My teeth are pretty straight but my orthodentist said I would still neeed to wear braces. Approximately how long should I be in need to wear that provided that my teeth are pretty straight. I read other peoples letters to the group where they are talking about a year or more. May I have your opinions. Would anyone advise? Many thanks. Guest guest
Natasha: I agree with Cammie on talking to your doctor about your concerns about relapse, as I had a similar concern after reading the messages on the board. I talked to my doctor about it before & after surgery too (I'm about 2 weeks & 5 days post op), and he told me that the type of surgery that I had has the highest chance of relapse for orthognathic surgery, which moving the upper jaw vertically down to close an open bite (and he filled in with bone grafts from cadaever bone). As a result of the higher chance of relapse, he is doing certain things more conservatively with me than usual (leaving the splint in longer, etc.) I am banded shut with a splint, so at least I am not wired. To some extent, my open bite is (was?) weird - opposite of most people on here - it was open in the back rather than the front. I only had two teeth that touched - front two teeth, and the gaps by the time you got to the back teeth were pretty big. When I asked my doctor about the chances of relapse, he said in 15 years or so, he had to only go back in one time to redo something. I don't know what causes relapse. I just hope it doesn't happen to me! I don't think I could go through this surgery again. (of coarse what I said my 2nd time in braces - now I'm on my 3rd). > > I'm considering having a lower jaw surgery. I have an appointment > > scheduled for this wednesday.
