Hi Terry:

I will be having my DS revision on June 25 with Dr. Gagner,(unless I can get

a earlier cancellation) so we will have to meet in the halls. I had my

original DS on 12-3-99 with Dr Gagner.

Has anyone been told they need to lose weight prior to surgery? I have been

Carol Matar

--------------------------

Hi Carol

I was informed by my surgeon that I would have to lose 10 pounds by my

surgery date or he would reschedule the operation. He told me that 04/30/03 and

my

surgery date ended up being 8/25/03 and I lost a total of 19 pounds by surgery

date. I went on a no fat, high protein eating plan. I drank plenty of water

and I also incorporated the slim fast french vanilla shakes into my program.

I kept the carbs to a bare minimum and I eliminated all pasta, rice's and

only mashed potatoes were kept. I tried to mimic as close as possible my

lifestyle eating habits for after surgery. I used smaller portion sizes and

really

took my time to eat. It worked that 19 pounds before surgery really made me

feel great just knowing I could do it on my own well at least getting it off

that is. My friends and family would tell me you are doing great you don't need

the surgery and I told them make no mistake about it I am having the surgery

because losing was never my problem it is KEEPING IT OFF that is my downfall.

I knew that without the surgery I would eventually regain the 19 lbs and

probably then some and that would put a serious strain on my body.

You can do it try to follow the program of high protein, low to no fat and

low to no carbohydrates like starches. You can have all the good carbohydrates

you want fresh vegetables, salad greens hey the only thing I would not

compromise on was my salad dressing I love Wishbone French it is the best and

that is

what I used. I also ate a cup of yogurt for breakfast everyday and a cup for

my late afternoon snack. For Lunch I had tomato soup and any of the

's soup at hands and I also had chicken nuggets from 's on occasion

but

no fries. You can also try the lean cuisine's. For something to snack on I

bought those Quaker Chewies they are granola bars that taste great I personally

preferred the oatmeal raisin granola bars but the chocolate chip ones taste

great too. I also ate sport cookies from wlssuccess.com the chocolate chip ones

no sugar. I also eliminated all sugar and only used splenda to sweeten my

coffee or tea.

It was hard but just knowing that I was preparing my body and mind for my

after surgery lifestyle made it much more bearable and believe me it was a

breeze

to switch to the post op diet from having done my own version for weeks in

advance. Oh and another thing I stopped drinking with my meals, I thought this

would be so hard to do and sometimes I would slip but I learned to prepare my

food and take it to the table and don't even put a cup or glass at the table

and just eat my meal. If I put a glass of water or juice at the table with the

intention of drinking it later it would just make it easier to slip up so I

learned no cups at the table while eating.

Good Luck to you I am sure your doctor like mine did not set this pre-surgery

weight loss rule to be cruel. Your doctor is telling you to lose 40 pounds

to ensure the safety to your life and that should be of the utmost importance

to YOU!! Plus the happiness you will feel knowing that you did it will be the

perfect jump-start to your new life. Girl I am telling you I had a defiant

little grin on my face when my doctor saw my full weight loss his 10 lbs plus 9

lbs for myself he gave me a big thumbs up:)

Good Luck we are all on your side and you can do it for yourself:)

I think it just depends on the doctor. Mine did not require it but he did

want me on a liquid diet 24 hours prior to surgery. I went ahead and did it 48

hours prior. They want the liver to shrink so there is no danger of nicking it

and all. But I am like you..if you could lose weight like they want you to then

heck we would have already done just that.

I’ve heard that some people have to lose 10-20 pounds before surgery. I

was very fortunate. My doctor asked that I only lose 5 pounds, which I

have already done. It has something to do with shrinking the liver and

stomach a little so it will be a little easier for them to maneuver around

in there. But 40 pounds sounds a bit much. That sounds down-right hard!

Hi Kris,

Pick me, pick me!!! I'll be your surgery buddy. I am having

upper/lower/genio done on March 25th. I'm not sure if anyone would

remember me because I have only posted once before but I'm having

this surgery as a result of a car accident that happened 3 years

ago. I would love to keep in touch.

Hi everyone,

Although I am not a regular poster on this site i do

read it every day. I am awaiting orthognathic surgery and have been

given a date for March 10th and am now getting really scared. I keep

having really bad dreams about waking up and not being able to speak

or feel my face and i guess i am just questioning whether i have made

the right decision. I am having both upper and lower moved to correct

an under bite. Anyway i hope your all ok and that many of you will

respond to the questions i am sure i will be bombardin you all with

after the surgery.

Dear Stacey,

I just had my surgery 8 days ago. It was a success . . . a common

factor with all surgeries of this type today. I had my lower jaw bone

and chin extended to correct a severe overbite. I have also worn

brace for three years in preparation for the surgery.

If you had asked me the day after surgery, was it worth it . . I

would have said no because of the severe swelling . .. a very, very

temporary condition. Looking like a blowfish for a few days beats a

short chin, deformed face in the future. The surgery is not at all

the difficult part. The hearling 5 days later is. Truly, there is not

much pain at all, just discomfort.

First, try not to dwell on the surgery itself. It is elective and you

are going to look great. Next, make sure you have family support to

help you with the healing aftewards. As I mentioned, only the first

few days are rough. 5 days after surgery, i had a formal job

interview. I just covered my face with a really nice scarf and

sunglasses. Do not become dependant on the drugs afterwards . . talk

to your surgeon about taking something mild to help the pain and

welling (Motrin, advil) as opposed to codine.

8 days later and I am still in a splint with my mouth closed but I am

wearing makeup, and going out. The swelling is almost gone. Truly,

you will be fine. Do IT!! Do not delay and do not put off.

Take care,

From California
