splint removal question

Hey all, I have my splint removed in a week and I am starting to

stress about it just about as much as I did the surgery! My splint

is not wired into my gums, and I will not need any pain meds

apparently for the procedure. Actually, my surgeon just smiled at me

and said, " It's just a snip snip thing! " (I thought that was an

entirely different procedure, but oh well, lol...) Anyhow, I have

been banded, no chewing, no soft foods really.. and I am wondering,

do you just go from not eating and chewing to suddenly eating and

chewing? What exactly was the overwhelming sensation that you felt

when you had the splint removed? (this is obviously for the veterans

here..) I keep trying to imagine not having this pressure on my top

teeth, not having this hockey puck in my mouth, and it's difficult

to do at the moment. I plan on driving myself to the appt. (it's an

hour away) and I hope that's not a problem either. So just any

thoughts would be nice to ease my anxieties...

Thanks, Alix

Alix,

When I got my splint removed at 6 weeks it was no big deal. He just

snipped and pulled the wires out and then removed the splint. Best

thing was I got to brush the heck out of my teeth and upper palate!!

It felt a little odd to be " free " but really neat to finaly see my

front teeth overlap my lower for the first time!! I drove myself to

and from the appt. No biggie for me.

I was already eating mushy food before the splint came out. My OS

just told me to take it gradual as far as foods. I really didn't

have any guidelines and pretty much just slowly started eating more

and more as I felt comfortable. It did take awhile for me to get

used to biting down with my front teeth. It wasn't that my

jaw/teeth weren't ready; it was just I was not used to the

new " feel " .

I'm 6mos out and eat anything I want...yes even raw veggies (a

little gingerly though).

Good Luck!
