Guest guest
Hi Sara! Try not to get TOO scared! My surgery is 2/11 and I don't even think it's hit me yet. I feel like - no use worrying about something before it even happens. I'll probably start worrying the morning I go to the hospital! :-) Corinne > oh golly golly gosh, im so SCARED. my op is on MONDAY MORNING! only a > day of my underbite left! im starting to wonder whether i should have > gone through with this, many of the messages posted on this site are > negative! what if mine goes wrong?! ahhhhh please someone reassure > me! im having my bottom jaw moved back, is this a less serious or > more serious op to have (compared to other jaw ops)? also, what do i > take to hospital?? thanks guys, all help is much appretiated! sara x

Complications are always possible though very rare. This procedure is compared very low risk to hard core stuff like heart bypass. >ahhhhh please someone reassure > me! im having my bottom jaw moved back, is this a less serious or > more serious op to have (compared to other jaw ops)? Should be less risk since you are not going to need bone graft from your hip. The primary risk of jaw surgery is some loss of feeling/numbness which happens in 50% of the pts (according to my surgeon) but most patients agree that this is better than no surgery. >also, what do i > take to hospital?? thanks guys, all help is much appretiated! sara x Take your insurance card and (if you can) a family member or a good friend. Some have suggested taking a change of clothing for showering or something but I was still drugged up from the morphine & anesthesia that there was no way I was going to shower. Food wise when you get home invest in a hand held blender they are 1000x easier to clean than real blenders. Good luck!!!!

Guest guest
Hi, I had my jaw moved back about 8 months ago and I am thrilled with the results. What I remember distinctly after waking up from the surgery was not to have an underbite anymore. It was a great feeling to have the teeth fit well. It's hard to say which type of surgery (upper/lower) is more sever. From a recovery perspective it varies a lot. In my case, recovery was so smooth to the point that I was enjoying my time off from work. I didn't take much to the hospital but a set of pyjamas, a change of underwear and a hat. Very important to have a hat to hide bed head when leaving the hospital! All the best and keep us posted. cheers on > oh golly golly gosh, im so SCARED. my op is on MONDAY MORNING! only a > day of my underbite left! im starting to wonder whether i should have > gone through with this, many of the messages posted on this site are > negative! what if mine goes wrong?! ahhhhh please someone reassure > me! im having my bottom jaw moved back, is this a less serious or > more serious op to have (compared to other jaw ops)? also, what do i > take to hospital?? thanks guys, all help is much appretiated! sara x

Guest guest
Sara, I think we can all relate to your nervousness! And it's normal/natural to feel nervous! This is major surgery. Perhaps, when you're feeling nervous, it would help to just acknowledge that that's how you're feeling and to know that it's perfectly normal. The most important thing is to feel confident about your surgeon and the anesthesiologist(sorry, bad spelling). Thousands of people have had this surgery, and yes, there are some complications, but there is no reason to believe that your experience will be a " bad " one. Discomfort? Yes. Feeling like you have little or no control over the events swirling around you? Yes. But you will come through it and (I believe) will be very happy with the results. I'm 6 weeks post-op and just beginning to feel like I " did the right thing. " I had lots of doubts and anxiety, before and after surgery. Give yourself time and space to feel the feelings. That's a normal process for this kind of procedure. Best of luck! Anne > oh golly golly gosh, im so SCARED. my op is on MONDAY MORNING! only a > day of my underbite left! im starting to wonder whether i should have > gone through with this, many of the messages posted on this site are > negative! what if mine goes wrong?! ahhhhh please someone reassure > me! im having my bottom jaw moved back, is this a less serious or > more serious op to have (compared to other jaw ops)? also, what do i > take to hospital?? thanks guys, all help is much appretiated! sara x

Guest guest
One more thing for Sara: On the morning/day of your surgery, tell your surgeon, nurse, anesthiologist, that you are nervous. Say it right up front. Don;t try to be " brave " when you're freaking out inside. My experience has been that someone will respond to you and that they will be kind, (or offer you a valium! ;-) > oh golly golly gosh, im so SCARED. my op is on MONDAY MORNING! only a > day of my underbite left! im starting to wonder whether i should have > gone through with this, many of the messages posted on this site are > negative! what if mine goes wrong?! ahhhhh please someone reassure > me! im having my bottom jaw moved back, is this a less serious or > more serious op to have (compared to other jaw ops)? also, what do i > take to hospital?? thanks guys, all help is much appretiated! sara x

Guest guest
Hi!! I, too, had an underbite, about a month or so ago! Had my surgery done on December 30, can you believe that? My husband and I spent New Year's eve at the hospital!! I was very anxious a few days before the surgery but calmed down on the day of. I figured that everything will be okay because I was comfortable and trusted my surgeon. Here are the things I packed for the " after-party " inside my hospital room: * a couple of nice, cheery pajamas (didn't want to wear the hospital gown!) * a pair of slipers -- didn't want to get my feet/socks dirty! Also cool to have around if you want to walk around the hospital hallways and bug the nurses! * underwear, of course! * hairbrush * Blistex (oh my gawd, this saved my lips from cracking!) * Zip-N-Squeeze bags (you never know if the hospital will have the necessary eating tools for jaw surgery patients...mine didn't really have any -- how annoying!) * Lotion * My 6-year-old teddy bear that has been with me through thick and thin * Digital Camera (to record everything -- including a photo of the hospital toilet -- for some reason, I got a kick out of taking pictures!!!) * Tons of magazines (forget books...you'd want easy reading materials with tons of pictures!) * Journal, pen -- to write down my thoughts (boy oh boy, it's funny now to read what I wrote down after the surgery...the medication really made me go off a tangeng with my writing!!) * Magna Doodle (for communicating -- didn't really need it, I was able to speak) I think that's about it... Don't worry too much! In a few weeks, you'll be feeling soooooo much better! And you'll lose a bit of weight, too! Don't forget to eat lots of your favorite foods before the surgery! Good luck!!! > oh golly golly gosh, im so SCARED. my op is on MONDAY MORNING! only a > day of my underbite left! im starting to wonder whether i should have > gone through with this, many of the messages posted on this site are > negative! what if mine goes wrong?! ahhhhh please someone reassure > me! im having my bottom jaw moved back, is this a less serious or > more serious op to have (compared to other jaw ops)? also, what do i > take to hospital?? thanks guys, all help is much appretiated! sara x

Guest guest
sara, i'm sure your surgery will go well. these doctors do these all the time, it's so easy for them! i really like my surgeon. we get along very well and i trust him. i also trust my orthodontist and since he recommended my OS, i had no doubt in my mind that i had the best doctor possible. because of this i wasn't nervous about surgery at all. i figured he knows exactly what he's doing, i trust him, what's there to worry about? i'll also be knocked out during the surgery, so i wasn't nervous about the actualy procedure either. my parents were a different story. my dad couldn't believe how calm i was. you just have to believe that everything will be ok, and it usually will be. about what to bring to the hospital...i brought lots of stuff and used NONE of it. i was so out of it after surgery that i pretty much laid in bed or drifted in and out of sleep. reading, listening to music or watching tv was the last thing from my mind. the one thing that i was happy to have was my digital camera. my friend and parents documented my time in the hospital. it was interesting to see considering i didn't even remember them taking them good luck with everything! you'll be fine! btw, i had upper and genio on dec. 17. just get through the first 3 days, then the rest will go by faster than you think! --- legally_blonde790 sara_pickles@...> wrote: --------------------------------- oh golly golly gosh, im so SCARED. my op is on MONDAY MORNING! only a day of my underbite left! im starting to wonder whether i should have gone through with this, many of the messages posted on this site are negative! what if mine goes wrong?! ahhhhh please someone reassure me! im having my bottom jaw moved back, is this a less serious or more serious op to have (compared to other jaw ops)? also, what do i take to hospital?? thanks guys, all help is much appretiated! sara x
