Guest guest
I don't think there is any one right way to go about which of the several doctors involved in orthognathic surgery first. From what I've seen on the two Yahoo boards, most people are sent to an orthodontist by their dentist and then the ortho refers them on to an oral surgeon. My path was a little different - my dentist referred me to an oral surgeon who then referred me to an orthodontist he worked with on surgical cases. So, it's up to you where you go first, but I do recommend looking at your insurance to see if it requires you to have referrals - that might dictate your course too. > > If I know that i need the surgery, Should I go straight to an oral > > surgeon, or dentist? Guest guest
I'm 31 now, but back when I was 17, my orthodontist removed my braces and told me that some day I'd need surgery. So, after 14 years or school, work, etc, I finally took a job that had excellent coverage, and I went straight to an Oral Surgeon. My insurance doesn't require me to have referrals, and my Oral Surgeon was in my preferred provider list. So, I went to see him, told him what I wanted, and he referred me to an Orthodontist that works surgical cases with him. I got braces on (all out of pocket) and started the long trek (5 months) of getting pre-approved for Orthogonatic. I'm happy to say that I got approved, and we are looking at a June surgery date. That's how I did it. -Blake > If I know that i need the surgery, Should I go straight to an oral > surgeon, or dentist?
