the hospital and the surgeons where I'll hopefully be having my

surgery. Went to their web site and to my surprise discovered that

MAMC (army hospital) doesn't offer lap only RNY. They are currently

doing a few select patients lap (as training for their docs) but I

don't meat their criteria. Then while reading their info on the

surgery it states that they prefer to take out the gallbladder and

the appendix while they're doing the bypass, just to prevent the

patient having further surgery for that later down the line. Plus

after they create a new " juice glass size " stomach they remove

the " old " one. I've never had gallbladder problems, no mattter the

weight I've been, but both my brother and sister have. And I'm not

even positive what the appendix does, but it just seems odd to me to

take it out now just in case it " might " cause problems 2-5-10 years

down the line. The good news I found is that their waiting list is

shorter then I was originally told and that at my BMI they might bump

me to the top of the list.

I have my consult with the surgeon on the 30th and after reading

their information I definately have some more questions to add to my

list to ask him.

Hi Pamela

I just had my RNY Lap surgery on 8/25/03 and my surgeon specifically said

that he does not arbitrarily remove fully functional body parts. My gall

bladder

was inspected and I have no problems or gall stones and I fully intend to

drink more than the 64 ounces of fluids a day so that my gall bladder and other

organs keep hydrated and able to flush themselves out. I don't want any more

surgery in my lifetime God willing.

As far as I've heard, it IS common for the appendix to be removed,

even if it is not problematic, in c-sections. I haven't heard of it

in WLS, and I assume that is because it is not located within the

area that the surgeons have opened up. Removing the gall bladder is

pretty common, IF it already shows signs of sludge or stones.

Removing your stomach?? Now that one stumps me!!
