Guest guest
Hello all... I keep reading how people say they can't open their mouths after surgery. I know it's because they are banded, but I keep readong even after the bands come off, people still can't open their mouths really wide. Why is that? Also, after healing is completed (does it take a year?) will you be able to open your mouth as wide as before surgery? Also --- what happens if you yawn? You mouth just doens't open? Thanks for the answers. -Blake
Guest guest
Blake, I haven't had the surgery yet, (it's Wednesday) but concerning the yawning, I read that if you put your fist under your chin it helps. Try yawning with your mouth shut..you just have to take a breath from deeper within. The postops should be able to help you with the other stuff! Guest guest
As I understand it, particularly if you're tightly banded or wired, the muscles stiffen up from a lack of use. In any case, the surgery rearranges the arrangements of the bones and muscles, and they have to figure out how to work in their new positions. And the stresses and forces on your TMJs will be different, so your body has a lot to get used to. I did not have a lot of trouble opening, but I took it very easy, and I did find (and still do, to some extent) that my jaws tire easily when I have to keep my mouth open for a long time (as at a dental appointment). I'm not aware of having had to yawn, so I can't answer that. Cammie > > Hello all... > > > > I keep reading how people say they can't open their mouths after > > surgery.
