Hi,

My name is Ernestine Washington known as (ernie). I had the vbg done on

Sept.4,2001 and it was done by Dr. Harberg in Houston, Tx. I know that I

will not be able to post as much because I work Retail(Foley's) but I will

be reading my emails. I am at the point know that I need some Questions

answered. I have lose exacty 102lbs.since that day. and I need to lose

another 70lbs. Was wondering if it will take longer because it is not as new

as before or what? What is the outcome after you past a year. I am still

working out and still don't eat that much, about 3oz. Thanks for hearing me

out!

Ernie

Hi Ernie,

Welcome to the group. I am not yet a year out but I think you should feel

great about the 102 pounds. I have noticed at about 10 months that I started

slowing in weight loss but I think we should continue to lose. May I ask how

much you take in in protein shakes if any per day? I know from what I have

read, experienced myself and with those who have gone on before me that

increasing protein and water intake will help push you off a plateau and

should get you losing again.

Keep us posted on your progress and again welcome to the group.

Randy,

I am not yet a year out from my revision. I am 18 years out from original

RNY. Sorry, I should have been clearer about that but I do post quite often.

And BTW. No one welcomed me to the group when I came online and I didn't

want another new person to feel they weren't accepted by not receiving any

encouragement from the group.

Randy and anyone else who cares to read further.I really feel compelled to

say something else here. I have seen quite a few new people post to this

group and rarely see them welcomed as newcomers and encouraged to actively

participate. It makes me remember how we were made to feel invisible when

we were fat. And when we put out our hands to be welcomed here " after a

year " , we are still often invisible when a hand of genuine fellowship isn't

offered in return.

It has seemed to me that mostly only 'popular' or 'long-term' members of the

group are those who mostly contribute and are encouraged through their

struggles. And it has made me feel that the group is slightly élitist.

Though I enjoy reading most of what is posted. It seems most often to be by

the same few who seem to know each other fairly well. And I have personally

been left wondering how to fit in more effectively.

I don't see people reaching out to 'new' people very effectively which may

account for the lack of more people posting to the group. But given that I

still feel like I am on the outside looking in more often than not, I am not

surprised that more newbies don't become more vocal. This is just my

observation after a few months. And if I didn't personally know one of the

accepted and well known members of the group...whom shall remain

nameless...I would have given up and blown off the list by now. I may be

totally wrong. And I apologize in advance if I have offended anyone. Maybe I

am just having a bad day. But just the fact that I have posted many times

and still must put my WLS pedigree after my name is evidence to me that I am

not yet recognized as an active member of the group.

Randy and all,

I understand. But I think there should be a place for new patients to go to

have a voice before they are a year out. I am looking into that. Does anyone

have any suggestions?

I didn't mean to get upset in my last post so hope all will forgive me. But

everyone needs support and if this group isn't the outlet, we need to make

sure there is one for all.

Randy,

I apologize for going off earlier.

But from one dog lover to another...we all need support. Sometimes the only

support I get are from my 2 fur ball pugs...Sophie and Abby.

Thanks for understanding and not getting upset with my tirade.

Martha,

You may be right. I know I don't welcome new member's nearly enough. I'll

try to do better. Being an ED nurse, working two jobs at that. Being a

nutritional consultant, having an in person support group, and three e-group

support groups I find it hard to keep up with all the member's. Like I said,

I'll try to do better, keep up and welcome more new members.

I understand. But I think there should be a place for new patients to go to

Martha,

I am fairly new, have not been " welcomed " by anyone and it never crossed my

mind to be bothered by it. I've read in silence for months and enjoyed the

learning process. It seems that pre ops or new post ops have many many

places to have a voice. There are all sorts of local groups, and how many

flavors does OSSG @ yahoo have now? What wears me out and runs me off are

the ones who have a surgery date in 2 weeks and coming crashing in the door

with 27 questions that should have been answered before they ever made the

decision to HAVE the dang surgery. Or the ones that are 1 month post op and

making all the dogmatic statements about how they are " NEVER " going to make

this or that mistake. I want to provide support, but do not want to be

treated like a short order cook who exists to answer (and be pretty damn

quick about it) the same questions over and over again cause someone is too

excited/lazy to read the wealth of information contained in the archives or

listen to their doctor.

Hi Martha,

Doggie person here, too (sorry, cat people). I'm also guilty of not

welcoming newbies. There are many support groups for people less than a year

out, the most important of all is the one that started all this, known simply

as OSSG. I think this group of grads is just not the gushy, gooey " Welcome,

WTG, Awesome WL " type of group...not that there's anything wrong with that,

it's just that we kind of left that behind with the newbie groups. Now, that

doesn't mean that new people should not be made to feel welcome here, because

they should. But, with the number of people on this list, all of us at one

time or another have felt like our posts may have been ignored or missed.

Please, NEVER take it personally! This group is not elitist, really, it's

just that some of us are big mouths , or just more vocal than others.

Just keep posting whenever you feel like it and, eventually, name recognition

happens, and we all get to know you, too. Everyone is always welcome on

here, and with your original surgery in 1983, G*d knows, you qualify! So,

tirade on, girl, you've earned it!

Hugs,

in NJ and Sir Sandy (the magnificent collie)
