Peggy,

I for one have not responded bcuz your friend's problem sounds too

complicated and possibly dangerous to be going on advice from an online

support group. She should probably insist on a second opinion from another

doctor, preferably one that you can find other local people there would

recommend as being particularly good.

I can agree with you on one thing: the fruit juice and slimfast liquid diet

sounds highly suspect to me. It is true that in the first week or 2, however,

many docs will advise fruit juice and Boost or Ensure or Carnation Instant

Breakfast (never heard of one recommending SlimFast) bcuz we do need liquids

only for awhile. I don't agree with those recommendations, but I'm not a

doctor. If it were me, I'd be doing protein shakes instead of any of those

other things, and clear broths spiked with Knox gelatin instead of fruit

juice (to keep the sugars down). That's just MHO.

Regards,

Carol A

This is new to me as well and I had a truckload of post-op

complications with my Lap RNY due to a torn suture. This just isn't

something I've ever heard of but one would think with not being able

to eat for usually twelve hours or so pre-op and everything else

they do there wouldn't have been anything in her stomach. Sounds too

weird for words but here's hoping all goes well with your friend.

belle

RNY 8/15/00

Panni/Hernia/Abdomino 8/13/02

Then 311#/Now 154#

Then 28W or 4X/Now 8-10 or S-M

Still 5'8 " with size ten feet!

OK, I'm not a medical person, and this is just my theory of one possible

situation, but if you look at a picture of a gastric bypass (www.asbs.org has

all the pics), you'll see that the other side of the " Y " is still connected

to the old stomach. Well, you know how the stoma can close, needing an

endoscopy to stretch it? Well, just possibly when the doctor reconnected the

small intestine at the " Y " , it closed up on the old stomach side, not

allowing any food left in the stomach to drain. Does that make sense? Of

course, it's just my theory, and I've never heard of it happening before, but

that doesn't mean it hasn't.

Hope your friend feels better soon!
