I've heard two causes suggested, Johanne -- the steroids we are given

during surgery, and the diet (mainly Boost and Ensure) post op. Dunno

whether either is the cause. I can tell you that my guy uses Glucose

salts for the steroids -- if I'm remembering right, which I may not

be -- and I didn't have that problem. And I didn't take in a lot of

Boost, nor Ensure.

Best I remember, it lasts maybe a month or so. So far as I know,

nobody has asked a dermatologist about it. I'd welcome hearing from

one what's going on.

Some people have used drying masques with good results. Do an archive

search if you want more specific help.

Johanne,

I, too, had the oily skin problem really bad. Mine actually started about a

week post-op and is just now starting to clear up...but I still have it - I'm 9

weeks post-op now. I did the cleansing thing and used the Oxy zit pad

thingies...they seemed to work pretty well for me and believe me, I tried just

about everything but to no avail.

As a matter of fact, I recently ran out of Oxy pads and forgot to get more and

the oil seems to be coming back...you know I'll be at Wal-mart tonight getting

more. :-)

Hope this helps.

Acne and oily skin

Hi everyone!

I know a few of you have experienced this lovely side effect of

surgery and I was wondering how long your skin acted like you were

going through puberty again.

My face started getting oily and breaking out about a week ago (I'm

24 days post-op) I assuming I might have to endure this for at least

a month or two. I'm hoping someone can give me hope that my skin

might clear up sooner. Also for those who've experienced this - did

you do anything special apart from the usual cleaning and acne

treatments? Do you know what causes the oily skin? Is it all those

nice drugs they gave me post-surgery? :)

Thanks!

I was told that the oily skin was actually caused by the swelling. I didn't

drink any Boost or Ensure, but I did receive steroids during surgery...your

guess about the cause is as good as mine...who knows???

Thanks Cammie! :)

I did find some older posts about it. Nothing about specific causes

though. I'm assuming it's mainly a minor annoyance for most people,

but I was curious about what might cause it. I've told people my new

oily complexion was probably due to the drugs I received and that

others have experienced it after jaw surgery. I thought about diet

changes also as you mentionned. I didn't drink much Boost (and I

don't like Ensure) but maybe simply the change in my diet might have

something to do with it.

Thanks Smooches! :)

My acne is under control right now and hopefully it will stay that

way. I have combination skin and I'm use to the occasional pimple,

but I wasn't prepared for my skin to get this oily and having to

declare war on pimples at this point in my life :)

I thought it was the swelling at first also. But my surgeon didn't

think that was the case. I didn't even think I had oily skin at

first - I thought my skin was just 'shiny' because of the swelling.

It doesn't look as 'shiny' now that my swelling has gone down, but

it's definitely still oily.

I am still dealing with it and it is driving me crazy (at almost 15

weeks) - I never had oily skin or acne in high school - maybe just

one or two breakouts - now it is just out of control! I hope it

goes away soon. I am just cleaning my face more and using oil

reducing/acne cleansers. I am not sure what else to do. It has got

to be due to all of the drugs they give us during surgery I can't

think of anything else other than stress - I hear it can take like 3-

5 months to completely get out of your system - uggh!
