Guest guest
I don't have an official answer, but I'll tell you what happened with me, although you didn't mention open bite. I had braces the first 2 times at age 12 & age 22 to correct a very open bite. The first time, didn't work at all as far as correcting the open bite (my teeth never were very crooked). The second time, all my teeth came together & touched perfectly while in braces. As soon as the braces came off, and the retainer was put on, the teeth came right back apart where they were to begin with. At that time, I don't think the orthognathic surgery was being done that much, or at least nobody told me about it. Now, over 20 years later, I had braces a third time, and I had the the upper jaw surgery (just a couple weeks ago), and I'm still a little scared of relapse possibility, which he told me is higher with the type of surgery I had, but I'm trusting the doctor to do the best he can. Best of luck to you. > Hi everyone, > > I have got a question here... Guest guest
Wow, three times in braces! You're tough! I am on my second time. I was advised that my braces didn't stick the first time because my upper/lower discrepancy was just too big. If I wanted to go without surgery I MIGHT be able to retain my bite long term if I always wore my retainer forever and ever. Although I will probably be cautious and wear my retainer extra long, I do hope not to have to wear it for the rest of my life, which will hopefully be at least another 40 years (I'm 35). I'm too soon postop to tell you if I've decided this whole thing was worth it, but so far I am doing well and am optimistic. And it definitely seems that most of the people here think the surgery was the right thing for them. But I certainly would not suggest this for purely cosmetic reasons. Hope this helps! christine > > Hi everyone, > > > > I have got a question here...
