hey all,

Just thought I would post some of my thoughts and experiences

about the first month or so of this crazy adventure.

I had my surgery Dec 18th so it has been a little more then a

month. The first week, especially first 4 days were extremely

brutal, but it was only up from there.

I spent the first night and most of the next day still in the

recovery room because they couldnt find an open room. Then when I

finally got a room the guy I was sharing it with was moaning and

screaming the whole night...needless to say I was ready to get home...

The first 2 nights at home were tough, I wasnt eating yet and there

were 2 screws in my mouth that scraped against my tounge everytime I

moved it. I also didnt really know the proper cleaning procedures

because the resident who discharged me didnt do a great job. I know

this sounds bad so far but it only got better from there....

I stareted feeling better and got used to the liquid diet. Even

though I was wired I tried to talk as much as possible and didnt

really use the pen past the first week or so.....it was good for me

to do that. I am still wired and sound pretty normal now....

Getting a good handle on the liquid diet is tough. The best idea my

girlfriend had was oatmeal for breakfast in the blender. It tastes

basically the same and fills you up. I use 2 packets. Also stoufers

frozen chicken dinners blend up pretty well if you thin them out with

chicken broth. I needed soemthing more hearty then soup. A good

shake which filled me up also has been a bannanna 2 spoonfulls on

penut butter honey and milk. You really have to experiment and see

what works best for you.

I was feeling pretty good after 2 weeks, started working half days

after 3 weeks and only at about 4 weeks did I feel completly back to

myself. Last week I would work in the morning and then come out and

take a nap from being so tired. Now I can last the whole day like

normal

Its a wild ride and you have to figure out what works best for

you...2 weeks and 4 days and I get to break my blender in half with a

baseball bat. I cant wait...

Don't be too hasty with the baseball bat, Pete -- sorry!

You may find you still have some problems chewing. I'm not saying

that you'll need everything blended, but you may welcome something

soft from time to time...

Thanks. I know, everyone keeps telling me to take it slow when I

finally start eating....I dont think that will be a problem because

any food will taste great. Its just really nice to feel like myself

again. have the bounce back in my step
