Hi, and welcome here.

Sounds like you're starting off.

Many of us here had braces as children, didn't have the surgery then,

relapsed, and now have to do the braces over along with the surgery.

The best lay resource I know of, honestly, is these web groups. Oss1

(here); oss 2 (look in the links) and Fiddlesticks' geocities

site (look in the links). Read around in what's there, then come back

and post your questions is the best suggestion I can make.

As for medical and scholarly ones, I believe there are many, if

you're skilled at doing such technical searches. I am not, but there

may be someone here who is.

I have read stats that are all over the block about the surgery. Some

say that lower advancement is more likely to cause numbness, and

particularly lower advancement by bilateral saggital split osteotomy,

which is exactly what I had, by 5 mm forward and 3 to the side. I

never had any numbness. Had very little pain. Very little swelling.

much bruising, greatly improved function and general mouth health. My

surgeon had a most excellent morning that day, and so did I!

For which I am grateful to the fates and fortunes, believe me!

I was neither wired nor banded when I left the hospital. I did have a

wired-in splint for 7 weeks.

9 mm is fairly large 3 to 4 mm is the smallest I've heard of a

surgeon doing. I have also, however, heard of much greater jaw

growth, including one patient who needed an astonishing 17 mm.

Good wishes to you!
