I'm not sure what sort of surgery you had done, but it's possible

the lumps you feel when you run your fingers along your jaw line

would not be helped by having your screws removed. If you had lower

jaw advancement, the lumps may correspond with where the cuts in the

bone were made to accomplish the advancement. In that case, it's a

matter of time for more bone to grow in and fill the gaps. That

doesn't mean that you're not healed. It just means that the bone

regenerating in a spot like this is different from healing from a

simple fracture. I'm nearly a year post-op and my law line still

feels quite lumpy - I can feel the notches where the bone was cut

and slid forward, but have been assured it's totally natural.

I hope you are able to find some relief.

Hi,

I haven't had the tenderness you describe but the area that kind of

bugs me is the area surrounding my upperlip. whenever I rub my nose

it kind of bugs me and I have had thoughts of having the plate and/or

screws removed. It really is not so bad , though, so I haven't done

anything about it.

Maybe one day I will consider it , but for now, I will just leave as

is.

Now I may be mistaken, but it was my understanding that over time,

the bones eventually grows over/around the screws and plates. So if

thats true, which again I just seem to remember another doctor

mentioning, it would sounds like a lot to go through, just to have

them removed, if it can be done.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Actually I don't think that the screws get covered over.

They do become part of the bone. MIne came out nice and easy.

To remove them is like screwing screws out of wood, and my surgeon

has the power screw driver to prove it!

I had surgery on March 3 and was told at my last doc appt. that I

would have to have surgery again next March to remove the screws that

are in my cheeks. She said that the ones along my jaw line would

become encased in bone and shouldn't bother me, but that she would

take them out if I found them annoying. I do half significant

tenderness where my screws are... I wouldn't have know what it was

except for the fact that I saw the panorex film and my tenderness is

exactly where the screws are. My doc said it is a simple out-patient

type thing, and that I would only need a day or two off work and the

only side affect would be swelling in my cheeks. Hope this helps!

Sometimes the bone recedes as you get older. I know of one case in

which that happened, and the doc just went in and removed the

offending screws in the jaw. He said it was absolutely no big deal.
