I slept on the couch with 2 or 3 pillows under me so that I could get in the 30

or so incline that they suggest. That worked for me as best as can be expected.

As for the foods, I'm sure many can back me on this. Once you start fending for

your self, you'll see it takes forever to make a meal and when your hungry, you

get frustrated that you can't eat jack, so the last thing your going to want to

do is try to make something to eat.

I would make a shake or 2 and freeze them, also blend up some soaps or what ever

you fancy and put them in Tupper ware in the fridge until I was hungry. Then

alls I had to do was eat and drink. Then when I felt better, I would restock.

You'll be amazed at what blends, I was eating chili dogs, turkey, even a roast

beef sandwich from Arbys. Just sucks trying to blend it all. Get lots of milk,

that works great with most anything.

Hope that helps.

sleeping question and one for

Hi all, my surgery is on the 17th, (in 5 days) and I was reading

about all the trouble the postops have had sleeping. Is there a

certain type of pillow or position that works best? Do you have to

sleep sitting up? I don't have a recliner, which could turn out to

be a problem. Any ideas?? And , how do you prepare food in

advance? What exactly am I preparing? Shakes? Thanks! Alix

Hi

I agree, your list looks really useful. I'll be having lower jaw at

some time soonish - despite my ortho thinking I'm ready for surgery -

my next surgical consult isn't until 5th Feb so if he also gives

the say so I'm not sure what the waiting time will be for the op. I

would just like it done sooner than later as we're planning to go to

Australia in August.

Anyway, in reply to your post - not quite sure about your food

choice of soap - the vision of your frothing at the mouth is quite a

picture! Now, what would you use? - those fruity soaps, maybe the

ones with the oatmeal or poppy seeds in? - delicious!!:)

i had a real tough time sleeping on my back i just could not do it

although that is what is exepected.

i managed to sleep on my side ice packs on and all. i used 2 really

soft pillows and laid right on my ice pack.needless to say the

swelling on the side i sleeped on went down alot faster. hehe

i could only sleep for about 2 maybe 2and a half hours at a time,

and counted the clock til i could take my meds again and put me back

to sleep for the first week. after that the sleeping got easier,

alot easier. but there are still some nights (like tonight, its 2am)

that just linger.

a suggestion for food prep

i had my mother in law do this for me and it was great

she boiled like 10 pounds of my fav vegetables in a huge pot,

drained it and then blended it with some flour and milk. that filled

a couple of pitchers so when i wanted i poured some into a bowl and

microwaved it. it lasted about 8 days and was very healthy.

It isn't the position that doesn't allow you to sleep - it is all

the medication and the congestion that keeps you up. I used an

upright pillow to help with the congestion, but frankly for about 3-

4 days nothing worked really and I was up all night - it took me

about I think a week and a half to get back to my normal sleeping

pattern where I wasn't waking up in the middle of the night and

staying up for hours at a time. Try not to take naps during the day

if you can help it and try to do some little things around the house

to keep active or go for mini walks with a family memeber and to try

to use some energy (don't over do it)- I found I slept better when I

was doing more things for myself and keeping somewhat active rather

than lying in bed all day (now for the first few days you can't

really help it).

Make double or triple batches of whatever you cook or blend and

stick it in container to put in the fridge - example if you make

mashed potatoes make like 3 batches and split them up in

containers. If you make soup - make a few batches - blend them and

have them ready to go so all you have to do is stick them in the

microwave. Another hint - when you start blending - blend

everything you can at one time for the next couple days and put them

in microwavable container (saves doing tons of dishes and more time

for when you are starving)

Hmm must have mistyped in one of my replies. Soup not soap. Anyway, I'm sure you

knew what I meant :), but hey, if you like soap, that may be good too. Just

choose and antibacterial one. Help keep those stitches clean.

Alix,

If you don't have a recliner, get lots of pillows and place them so you will be

sleeping practically sitting up. I do have a recliner and I sleep pretty good.

However, when my grandbaby was here for the two weeks before Thanksgiving, I

slept in the bed with her (she likes to cuddle with me) and I used about 4

pillows...slept really well then, too.

As for foods, you're not just preparing shakes, you can actually blend just

about anything...chicken, vegetables, noodles, etc...and " eat " that.

Good luck on the 17th. We're rooting for you. I'm sure you'll do fine. Like

many have said before, the worst part is the waiting. The first week post-op

will be the hardest, but it's really not unbearable and time will just fly by

after that. I had a pretty easy time of it (I had upper and lower done) and I

pray that your time will be even better than mine.

Smooches
