Guest guest
I was told I would be in braces 10-12 months and it was 3 years until I scheduled surgery and 3 1/2 years before I had surgery. > I just got my braces yesterday and now I'm already wondering how long until I can > have the surgery performed. Due to work issues and problems finding the right Dr. I waited 2 1/2 years. I am 2 days post-op. Eventhough you have a 7mm overbite by the time ur ready for surgery your overbite will probably be less. My teeth were straight too and I was told that I had a 6mm overbite when I began braces. When it came to surgery my overbite was only 3mms. The orthodontist usually will push your teeth back quite a bit. My ortho told me some people's teeth move faster or slower than others. They can only estimate. My was kind of on schedule. Good luck with the braces they make a huge difference for the better in your appearance as time goes on you'll see. Guest guest
So far this is all really bad news! I am 19 and I want to get all of this over with as soon as humanly possibly. Were your teeth especially crooked or hard to move? > > I just got my braces yesterday and now I'm already wondering how > long until I can > > have the surgery performed. I used to have your attitude in my early 30's . That I know I should fix my bite but Im too old. Whos going to want me with braces. The idea of surgery. I wasent going to that to myself not at this stage in my life. I am a vain lady. Then I reached a point in my late 30's that I was not going to turn 40 and hate my bite and smile ,as well as lot of other things in my life By the way if u let it go it usually gets worse which was the case with me I was pain from my bite till I finally took action. I never had trouble getting a boyfriend but the braces improved my appearance tremendously and when I heal from the surgery I will look even better. I am only two days post-op I have made so many changes and strides in my life in the last three year braces and jaw surgery is just the tip of it. I am so much better for it. You may not belive this but whatever changes you make to yourself the body heals and you will feel like the same person only better. My professor in college used to say, when I used to complain that I will never graduate it is taking too long. He said: It will take as long as it takes so you might as well enjoy the ride. Take it from someone who been there. Your lucky that ur young what ever it is do it today. Ur probably be done by the time ur 21 and u have ur whole life ahead As Lennon said life is what happens when your making other plans. I hope it didnt sound like a lecture. Guest guest
I haven't read the other posts on this, but your remark that you are 19 and want this all over with caught my eye. I've been impatient my whole life (recently reformed thanks to this process), and all I can tell you is that you WANT your ortho to take his or her time to ensure that you get it all right the first time. Move teeth too fast and you have troubles. Pressure to get the braces off early, and things can slide back to where they were before surgery. You don't want to go into surgery until your teeth are ready either. My advice, take a deep breath, be glad you're getting this done early in your life (unlike some of us oldheimers here, or the " repeat offenders " ), and hang on for the ride. It may seem like forever now, but once you start into treatment, before you know it, you'll be posting " 1 week before my surgery - I'm nervous as heck! " or " braces are coming off tomorrow! yahoo! " . That's all! I asked all of the same questions when I got started too. > So far this is all really bad news! I am 19 and I want to get all of this over with as soon > as humanly possibly. Guest guest
Never, ever have I known anybody who wanted to be in braces one moment longer than necessary, friend. You are not at all unusual in that. The answer is, as long as it takes. Nobody I know can predict, with the possible exception of my ortho, who was right on the money. He told me the whole thing, for an underbite, underjet, and crossbite, with a lower jaw that was too short, would take 18 to 20 months. I came out of the appliances at 20 months, almost precisely. I was also blessed with excellent specialists and good luck. And I tried my damndest to do exactly what they told me: wear elastics here -- yes, sir. 24/7 -- yes, sir. Don't eat nuts, popcorn, caramel and keep things clean -- yes, sir. Don't miss appointments, and don't break the hardware -- yes, sir. My teeth moved very, very quickly. They were indeed very confused about where they should have been, despite the fact that I had worn braces 40 years previously. There are no short cuts worth taking in these matters, at least that I know of. You might inquire, if you haven't the braces on already, about appliances known as " Damons " or " Speed Braces. " They have a reputation among their enthusiasts for doing their work more quickly and more gently than traditional brackets and wires. I do not know whether they are suitable for surgical use. Guest guest
also, your ortho should be working with your oral surgeon.. and he/she should let you know when an appropriate surgery date is (close to the time, that is). > > I just got my braces yesterday and now I'm already wondering how > long until I can > > have the surgery performed. Guest guest
Hi, I had braces since late August of last year and am already prepping for surgery upcoming the 11th of February, which I guess that's about 6 months. I guess it really depends on how your teeth are before braces, if they are straight and all then it won't be that long till surgery. I know how it is too, I'm 19 and have an underbite but its no problem just keep doing whatever your doing and time will fly.

Guest guest
My ortho told me I would be in braces 20-24 months. I was ready after only 13 months. He said I should be " free " by this summer. July 5th will be my 2-year mark for braces...I should be out by then. I will be 15 weeks post-op on Thursday. Hang in there. It seems long, but it's well worth it. By the time you get to this point, you'll be asking yourself, " Has is really been that long?
