I had upper jaw surgery and I have plates in. I remember my oral

surgeon saying something like if they couldn't get my stable enough

I would have to be wired shut, but just like your surgeon said it

was a slim possibility that would have to be done. And I didn't end

up being wired shut, I just had rubber bands. From what I've read

online, the plates reduce the need for being wired shut.

Hi, I have had upper/lower (classIII) 7 weeks ago and my jaws were

wired by choice! the wiring is for holding the lower jaw in place

with a splint,if plates are not used. The advantage of not using

plates on the lower jaw is: no external screw marks, and reduced risk

of damege to the nerve. so I opted for the non plate option and had

my jaws wired for 4 weeks, the liquid diet is not so bad! did not

have any problems with it and lost some weight in the process. I did

not have any facial numbness after my op. (gums still numb though!)

7 weeks gone my swelling is 98% away and I am very happy with the

results,Cant wait to get my braces off!

I am delighted for you, , that all goes so well for you.

Congratulations!

I can't resist adding, though, that " external screw marks " are really

a non-existent worry. I would defy you to find the spots on my cheeks

where those tiny screws were inserted. As for numbness -- hey,

however you get there, the absence of it is fine! I have none either,

and I had the bsso, without wiring.

There are many paths to the goal, and so long as the one you choose

gets you there, and you're pleased with the results, who cares what

you chose. One is not superior to the other, far as I can see, as

long as you get the desired results.

Congratulations on your patience with the process. And on studying up

and making choices that rewarded you.
