Hey all....5 days post op and finally starting to turn the

corner...still painful but not terrible, slept a few hours last

night...just went for a walk....hopefully on the way up from here.

Question is can I mess anything up by trying to talk. I am somewhat

understandable and I hate writting everything but I dont want to mess

with anything. I am banded shut. Thanks

Pete

Hi Pete...

Glad to hear you are on the Other Side. It gets better each day,

really it does.

Talking right about now feels like you have about 4 bags of marbles

in your mouth. I used paper some of the time a couple of days. I

just remembered to focus on enunciation rather than how much I could

say. Still now at nearly 7 weeks post op I don't get the words out

as fast as others in conversations but that's ok. I'm still a wee

bit numb on the left lower jaw and chin.... Otherwise all the

numbness is gone. I was banded shut for 5 weeks too!

When you begin to get the tingly feeling or pins and needle feeling,

don't panic, it is just the sensation coming back to your face.

Remember to sleep with your head elevated.... I slept in the recliner

for a couple of weeks, then graduated to pillows on the sofa. Keep

on rinsing after you have something liquid......

Sorry if I sounded like your mom...

Feel better!

Congrats!

Carin

Hey Pete, I am banded shut too, had surgery the day before you. Wow,

you walked?? Better than me. I'm ready to pass out after a trip to

the bathroom..which is frequent. Anyhow, I am talking. My husband

says to talk, because he's a physical therapist and he likes it when

people use muscles. My surgeon frowns at me and says, well, you

might swell a bit, but well, you can try, just don't talk for HOURS.

Then he said, you know, with all that major hardware I put in your

mouth you are going to have a really, really hard time messing it

up. That made me feel better, hope it does you, too. I've been

thinking about you, glad to hear your pain seems controllable.

Weren't those first few days BAD??? AlixIn

One of my surgeons also said that the only way I could really hurt

anything was by falling. ( " And you are not going to fall. If you

think you are, just sit down! " )

My surgeon kept telling me not to talk. He didn't band me " Because I

know you like to talk. A lot. And I hate to think of you straining

against the elastics. But don't talk! "

I did find that when I did talk (and I really tried not to) I became

very, very weary and had some swelling and soreness. No offense to

your husband, but this stuff, I think, is a pretty specialized field.

I do know, however, that my surgeon doesn't wire people because he is

of your husband's attitude about keeping the muscles moving, rather

than immobilizing them. He thinks it lets them learn their positions

more gradually, and that the movement helps keep the blood supply

going to the cartilege that is healing. Different docs have different

approaches, as noted before.

You're doing well. Just hang on and exercise your patience most of

all!

Best,

Cammie
