To Shiloh - re kids and braces

Shiloh,

I think I'm buying my orthodontist a new Mercedes this year. Not

only am I in braces, but my 14 year old is almost done, and my 11

year old is 3 months into it, and last week my 8 year old got a

referral because his top two teeth are each going different

directions and the dentist wants to stop that before it goes any

longer.

ANYWAY, the real reason for my post is your comment about your oldest

being on here when you graduate. My 11 year old was told she has a

jaw like her Dad's. But she's young enough that they can still fix it

with headgear. Yeah, I know it sucks, but at least she doesn't have

to go through the surgery. So, get your kiddo into the orthodontist

for a check sooner rather than later. Maybe they'll have luck with

still growing jaws for you.

Shiloh, friend, I don't understand anything at all about this post...

Maybe I'm just dense.

But one doesn't, I hope, threaten kids with things they may hate but

need, therapeutically.

" Not responsible enough for braces " ??? Hello? Mama and Papa gotta do

some supervision, methinks. They have to be " responsible " for

supervision.

I dunno. I have trouble following those " insertion " messages, and

maybe I'm just not reading right.

But the right time to treat a kiddo, I think, is when the kiddo's

mouth and structure dictate. I have also read lately, on other sites,

that sometimes Herbst appliances can substitute for headgear, and

that kids find them more bearable. Myself, I would not want either,

but would have put up with both if I'd had to.

I also think it's a really cruel tactic to set up any part of

orthodontic treatment, even in jest, as a punishment. It's hard

enough to go through without thinking that you have the folks who are

supposed to love you inflicting it on you out of spite. Instead, it

comes, or should, from love and a yen to help the child have a

healthier and happier life.
