Guest guest
Hi Laurel, The ortho can do fine-tuning of the teeth after the surgery, and yes, the teeth do settle in, mine did especially once the braces were removed (and a crown/bridge/crown combo was replaced). I had upper/lower/genio in Aug of 2002. I had the same concerns as you though, about how the teeth would fit together, I just couldn't figure it out as when I brought my lower jaw forward, things didn't feel as if they would line up correctly. When I voiced them to the cranial therapist I've been seeing, she said " you don't need to figure it out, the surgeon is the one that needs to know all that " . What I didn't know was that they can rotate as well as slide forward, etc. After all this time, things have settled in nicely. Good luck! and here's hoping you're ready for surgery, since I know what it's like to be waiting, waiting, waiting for it. > Hi all, > I have not had time to read all 70,000 messages yet, but what I > have read has been very helpful. > My story - I got braces one year ago merely to straighten my upper > teeth - my canines were high, but my bite was fine. Guest guest
Geez... You haven't made it through 70,000 messages??? I dunno why! Actually, I suspect (but haven't checked it) that Yahoo! wiped out a bunch of those 70,000, in one of its " housecleanings. " Anyhow... That business about sticking your tongue out sounds more like an open bite to me, but I'm no doc. It is, however, not at all unusual for a bite to become a lot, lot more out of kilter before surgery than it has ever been, nor for an open bite to become a lot moreso. The surgeon will know whether you're ready, and where to put your teeth, if he's a proficient orthognathic surgeon. And your orthodontist will know how to do the finishing steps to get everything lined up, post-op, when the time comes. Still, ask anything that's worrying you. Your docs should be able to give you better answers than we can. That's why they get the big ol' bucks for doing this stuff, and why they went to school so long to learn how. Far as I know, all teeth do settle, and they settle some more after the braces come off. (My ortho did " equillibration, " or grinding on the occlusal surfaces, a month or more after the appliances were removed, and again several times later, just for that reason.) Good wishes to you. Keep on asking questions, so long as there's anything that's troubling you. Guest guest
When my splint came out after surgery, I was so excited to feel my teeth fitting together. I was really disappointed when only two teeth (front left upper and lower cuspids) touched. Then I went to my ortho. We started me on elastics for my molars and they were touching within hours of that first adjustment. So, you have every right to be worried, but know that doctors have lots of little tricks up their sleeves. > Hi all, > I have not had time to read all 70,000 messages yet, but what I > have read has been very helpful. > My story - I got braces one year ago merely to straighten my upper > teeth - my canines were high, but my bite was fine. Guest guest
, Forgive me if you've already posted this information. I'm old and my mind is feeble so I don't remember stuff long term and I have trouble remembering who is whom. :-) Anyway, how long ago did you have your surgery? Are you out of braces? If so, how long did you have them after surgery? How long did it take to completely close your open bite after the surgery? I'm getting my splint out on Wednesday and just wanted a ballpark approximation of what to expect. Thanx, Smooches Re: I'm new - worried that teeth won't fit When my splint came out after surgery, I was so excited to feel my teeth fitting together. Guest guest
Smooches, I had my surgery on March 12, 2003, so nearly 9 months ago. I am out of braces. My ortho removed them on November 4 and I probably would have done him bodily harm if he'd changed that on me as I got married 4 days later (SO glad not to have braces in my wedding pictures... to heck with all the people who say " you and hardly even notice them " ). My ortho let me come in every 5 weeks instead of every 6 after surgery specifically because of my wedding date. I only had to wear elastics for a very short while after my splint came out. I think my splint was out on a Monday and I saw the ortho on Wednesday. He told me I had to wear the elastics until my teeth met. Once they did, I only had to wear the elastics 12 hours a day (at night). I think I wore my elastics for two days, though my teeth were touching pretty well within a few hours of that first post-op adjustment. It's hard to say what your bite will be like when your splint comes out. You may have lots of teeth that touch, but don't worry yourself too much if you don't. It's a team effort between the surgeon and the ortho. > > Hi all, > > I have not had time to read all 70,000 messages yet, but what I > > have read has been very helpful. > > My story - I got braces one year ago merely to straighten my > upper > > teeth - my canines were high, but my bite was fine. Guest guest
Smooches, You're welcome. Yep - I'm the one who got married on Cammie's b-day. Don't know about the latter part of that, but I sure felt pretty spiffy on my wedding day. I had a feeling you'd remember me ; ) > > > Hi all, > > > I have not had time to read all 70,000 messages yet, but what > I > > > have read has been very helpful. > > > My story - I got braces one year ago merely to straighten my > > upper > > > teeth - my canines were high, but my bite was fine.
