I can't breathe!

I'm one day post op...same day surgery...mandibular and maxillary

osteotomies.

My throat is so full of phlegm, I can't swallow any of my medicine

and any water sips drools right out. I'm worried about dehydration as

I have only had sips of water in two days!

I'm using the humidifier, steam bath, nasal sprays...but nothing

seems to be breaking up the phlegm and now my nose is full of dried

blood. I'm breathing through the little tube the hospital had me

on...and I sound like Darth Vader...every breath takes effort.

I tried to relay my concerns to my doctor, but he said it will pass

and is normal. I don't like this at all.

Any other suggestions? HELP. I want off this bad ride.

Hang in there - I was feeling very similar to you one week ago

today (had my surgery on Dec. 17th). It will definately get better

soon, and you will get through the bad ride. Irish had good

suggestions for you already. I sprayed saline in my nose just

before taking a bath or shower. Then take the hot wash cloth and

put it over your face & breathe into it. That plus using cutips

with hydrogen peroxide to clean out the bottom of my nose helped.

It takes time though. I had an appt. with my dr. about 5 days after

surgery where he cleaned out my nose too, and ended up giving me an

IV because I was lacking on the fluids too due to constant stomach

upset. After that, I got much better. Hope you feel better soon.

Hang in there , I am 9 days postop and breathing through my

nose again. Actually, you should see improvement by the fourth day

in the breathing area. I remember last week really struggling to

breathe and I just kept telling myself, oh, I'm just on a long

snorkeling excursion, that's it! I also reminded myself that my body

KNOWS how to breathe, even if there's only a tiny, tiny space. LOTS

of hot showers, stick with the humidifier and the warm washcloths do

help..You'll get through this and soon you'll be going, ahhhhhhhh,

AIR. Alix

So sorry, . You're doing all the right things, sounds like, but

yes, you do need lots more fluids than it sounds like you're getting.

And you need those meds, too, to get rid of some of these troubles.

Squirt some water in there (your mouth) with a syringe. And maybe

some warm water would help with the phlegm, if you can manage it.

Fiddlesticks used moistened q-tips, very gently, to get some of

the dried blood out of her nose. But BE CAREFUL!!!

I'm sorry it's so nasty for you. But you won't pass out (at least

I've never heard of anybody doing so, except from the dizzy swoons)

from lack of oxygen. Just try to hang on, and it WILL get better!

Best,

Cammie

Oh yes, and some folks have found those breathe right strips helpful,

too.

Thank you ALL for the tips and the encouragement.........I've been

following your advice...and those breathe right strips do help some.

Switched from ice packs to heat packs today. The black and blue is

starting to show through.

Been watching lots of movies.

Thanks, again, to all.

So good to hear you're doing better. Now tell me you're getting some

liquids and meds in there, and I'll quit bugging you! (Hey -- it

could be a baby spoon ful of slushy daiquiri if you want!) Salud!

Bruising doesn't matter. May look awful, but try a veil. Or a mask --

Mardi Gras isn't far away!

Take care...
