-- Optifast vs Surgery

I am having a problem....... I am wondering if this surgery is the right

thing for me. I have the insurance approval but, they require me to go on

Optifast for 12 wks first and my husband and his sister think maybe I should

just do

the Optifast program and not have the surgery. My husband says he's not

gonna be able to take off work and take care of me and my kids (the kids are

2 and

5). I am afraid that I am gonna be stuck here with no energy and no way to

take care of my kids. Maybe I shouldn't have the surgery?? I'm so

confused!

Any body got any advice??

Where are you located? Do you have friends or a church family you can get some

help from? I too am having to lose some weight prior to surgery....like if it

was that easy....why would I be doing the surgery....LOL! Just didn't know if

you were in the Texas/Houston area, I would be more than willing to help.

Luckily, my parents are coming to help take care of me and my son, but he is 10

so he can do a lot of things himself. Yours are young enough that won't

understand they can't jump on mommy's lap. I'll be praying for you!

Hello Jess

I can see the dilemma that you are in and you are in my prayers. I would do

the Optifast portion to prepare for surgery and not just do it for it's sake

alone because sweetie how many times have you attempted to lose weight and keep

it off with various kinds of diet programs or modifying your eating habits to

where you are eating strictly rabbit food? Well, I know I have done and

tried it all from starving myself to soup diets to working my self out into a

frenzy and every time I gained whatever I lost back and sometimes even more to

boot :) If you decide to simply do the Optifast alone and no surgery please

whatever you do keep the weight off that you lose. The danger in yo yo dieting

is

the body just can't handle the stress of losing and gaining and a lot of

people die by continuing to do this pattern. So long story short lose it and

keep

it off with the Optifast or go for the surgery and the lifestyle change.

Your family will come around and help you if you decide to do the surgery

especially if you let them know that you are doing this permanent thing in order

to

survive and be around with them for as long as possible. I had my Lap RNY

surgery on 8/25/03 with no pain after surgery no pain at home I have lost 13

pounds to date and I have so much joy, energy and for once optimism about a

wonderful future with getting back to who I really am.

God Bless You in your decision dear one

Jess I wouldn't give up on surgery yet. Isn't optifast a liquid diet

program? I would be fearfull that after I lost weight I would go

back to the same old eating habits. Double check with people and

friends around you. see if they can help out a day or so here and

there. Is day care an option? I wish you the best.

Jess,

I have been on the Optifast program before when I was about 18. It is a

fully liquid diet where you have to drink those nasty shakes 3-4 times

per day and one small meal at night. I lost 50 lbs in three months which

was great but as soon as I¡Çd lost the weight I needed and got to eat

regular food again, I gained the weight right back. This is a constant

problem with people who are overweight and yo-yo diet. I would try to

get your doctor to explain to your insurance that this could cause your

weight to increase along with put more stress on your health instead of

helping you.

I also wanted to ask (and I hope you don¡Çt take offense), is your

husband supporting you in your quest for surgery? From just what you

wrote here it sounds as if he doesn¡Çt want you to have it and

won¡Çt

help you out. Does he understand why you want this and that it is

necessary if he wants you to be around when your children graduate from

high school/college and/or get married? I just was curious and hope

you¡Çre not offended by my asking these questions.

If you have any other questions about Optifast, please ask. :-)

Jess try to explain to your family that it is not about will power once you

get to a certain weight it is about saving your own life. After surgery your

body will simply not allow you to do certain things and eating small meals is

natural because your stomach cannot hold but so much. Tell that sister in law

of yours where does she see this surgery or any surgery as a quick fix. You

still have to work at losing weight and maintaining the loss after surgery

except now you can see results and you have a way to permanently modify your

habits. The surgery is just a tool to help us not a quick fix. Maybe they are

scared your husband and sister in law of who you can really be once the weight

is

no longer an issue sometimes people manipulate MO people and use the weight

to control there actions. Without the weight perhaps you can achieve those

inner dreams that you have that no one else on the planet knows about Jess.

Remember you do whatever is going to preserve your life for you and your

children.

It would seem to me that your husband would be happy to have a joyful, trim

and healthy wife to be able to parade around and enjoy or is he happy to see

you unhappy and controlled because of your weight really open up your eyes and

see all those around you who are supportive and those who are negative and

come to your own conclusions. In the long run you have yourself and if you

won't

take care of you now who is going to take care of you if God forbid a

debilitating illness strikes that was brought on even more by being MO will

it all passes by.

Good luck all the best to you and your family :)

I think there is another Bridget on our board now. I'm Bridget

Northam from California. I will sign my messages Bridget N. so we

don't get mixed up. Welcome to the other Bridget or Bridg!

As far as the Optifast compared to surgery - there is no

comparison. I've tried the Optifast and can't wait to try the

surgery:) The Optifast works for some people. Unfortunately, I

wasn't one of those people. The important thing to remember is that

with shake-type diets is that they are usually only temporary. They

can be helpful for taking off a few pounds in a short time but who

would want to stick with Optifast permanently? Noone! The surgery

is a tool that will help you lose weight permanently by forcing you

to change your eating habits permanently. The best advice I can

give is to talk to your doctor. I'm around 350 pounds and I've been

dieting my whole life. My doctor feels the surgery is the best

thing for me but maybe you don't have as much weight to lose or

maybe you'll be one of the lucky ones that can lose it on your own.

Let us know what the doctor says and be happy you're working on a

solution!

" I guess the Optifast

> is suppose to be nutrionally a boost for my system?? "

Hi Jess, my guess is that your dr would like you to get a head start

on your weight loss with the Optifast. I was on a similar program

called HMR for 10 months a few years before my surgery, and I lost

125 lbs on it in less than 9 months. Had I had the surgery then, I'd

have been in GREAT shape...

" He knows the reasons why I want it but, he just doesn't

understand why I

> just can't have the will power now not to eat if I'm gonna have

the will power

> after not to eat. "

The thing is is that once you have the surgery, it will NOT be about

willpower anymore. Speaking for myself, the whole reason I could

never maintain any weight lost is because willpower eventually runs

thin and then one is back to doing old habits again. Once you have

the surgery, your body simply won't let you eat how and what you

want...

In the past, if I wanted ice cream (my favorite binge food then),

the only thing between me and that ice cream was my willpower, and

eventually I " lost " the battle. Now, while ice cream still sounds

good, I won't touch it. And the reason is simple - because if I dare

even take one spoonful, I'll regret it.

When the food you turn to for comfort is no longer a comfort, you

stop turning to it, and this is what it's all about in my opinion...

Hope this helps,

Caroline

Hi Caroline

Why can't you have ice-cream Eadies makes a great fat free sugar free ice

cream and when I can I surely will enjoy some :) I am not lactose intolerant

after my surgery. I enjoy 2 percent milk in my diet sugar free jello and in my

cream soups and I have not been sick at all.

Jess In MI

Hi Jess

I kinda figured people are scared of what they don't know and they can see

that the WLS could open up your life and they are scared of it do what you need

to for yourself to fulfill your dreams and goals and be that role model for

change for the both of them.

Good luck in your decisions

Ladies,

Blue Bunny makes some wonderful ice cream treats with Splenda also. I've

indulged myself a few times with ice cream sandwiches and Eskimo pies

and they are really good!

Hi Caroline

Why can't you have ice-cream Eadies makes a great fat free sugar free

ice

cream and when I can I surely will enjoy some :) I am not lactose

intolerant

after my surgery. I enjoy 2 percent milk in my diet sugar free jello

and in my

cream soups and I have not been sick at all.
