Hello everyone, my names Dan and im going to be 17 on January 7th.

I got my upper jaw surgury done on Monday, at about 1pm. The surgury

lasted an hour and a half or so. I'm scheduled to go back to work

and school at 2 weeks post op. I've been reading alot through the 2

groups I found on jaw surgury... and I frankley don't think I should

have. I don't recall hearing that the numbness in my upper lip may

not come back for MONTHS. I'm really geting worried. I don't recall

my doctor saying that the recovery period would be that long. It's

quite depressing. I'm all right though, today some of my swelling

went down and new swelling came. I can't feel much around my

lip/nose area, but my bottem jaw is find and stuff. My upper lip

usually gets jolts of movement everyonce in a while, is this the

numbness starting to wear off? With only upper surgury, how long do

you guys think it'll be till my swelling is mostly gone? I really

appriciate your guys's input, im allways online reading... I probebly

will be untill im fully recovered.

be sure to message me ProtoVivantA it would be nice to have some

more company, espececially people that know what im going through,

plus its allways nice to meet new people! I heard that my young age

will aid in a swift recovery, which im very happy about. Each day I

seem to get better and better... but I guess only time I will tell.

I'll be sure to post again soon if I feel anything relavent should be

I don't do much with the instant message things -- they have a sort

of demanding nature that insists on attention there, and I'm too

scatterbrained to keep up with them much.

I can tell you, though, that one of the virtues of these groups is

that there's someone on here, from somewhere, most any hour of the

day or night. So if you want some help or just wanna talk, you can

usually get an answer to a question from someone.

And you're welcome to post whenever you wish. (Especially if it's on

target and suited for a family site.)

Do remember, though, that at least most of us are patients rather

than professionals, and any problem you have are best addressed by a

professional. Some of us have learned some easy tricks that help with

the annoyances of this stuff (like Aquaphor ointment for badly

chapped lips, post-op, or Vitamin E for the same). But anything

serious needs serious attention.

Good wishes to you. You're on the other side of the mountain now, and

you'll be surprised at how soon you'll see the braces coming off! The

hard part was the waiting for surgery, honest.

Hi Dan and welcome. Oh, how sweet and innocent you sound (I'm old so anyone

under 30 is sweet to me LOL!).

I'm really sorry to hear that your OS didn't prepare you for the numbness.

Although it can take months, even years to come back, if at all...it also can

only take a few days or weeks. Some didn't have numbness at all. This is

another one of those " you-have-to-just-wait-and-see " moments.

Yes, the recovery period is long, however, that doesn't mean that you won't be

back functioning normal. For most, full functionality comes back way before the

recovery is complete. As for the swelling, it actually starts to go down after

about day 4 or 5. By two weeks, the swelling will have gone down quite a bit -

usually. I was an unusual case in that my swelling was worse than normal...but

it's almost gone now...at least on the outside. " Jolts " and " zips " and " zings "

and such in your lip/face are all good signs of the feeling coming back. As

annoying as it may be, it's a good thing to have them.

I had upper and lower jaw surgery 9 weeks ago and my upper lip feels almost

normal. My bottom lip and chin have that feeling you get when your foot goes to

sleep...very annoying, but I've become accustomed to it and it doesn't really

bother me that much. I've really learned patience through this process.

For some, 2 weeks post-op was enough time to return to school and/or work, but

for others, 3, 4, 6, 8 weeks post-op was still too soon. It all depends on the

individual. I suggest that you don't just lie around...get up and do something,

just don't overdo it. Get up every morning, shower and get fully dressed...I

believe it makes you feel better. If you feel tired, rest...if you have energy,

use it or at least some of it. Drink lots and lots and lots of water and try to

get back to a normal sleep pattern as soon as possible. If you have meds, make

sure you take them and on time! Follow everything your doctor tells you " to the

tee! " Don't try to cut corners just because you " think " you feel better or just

because you don't feel like doing it.

I really hope this helps and if I don't get to say it then, HAPPY 17th

BIRTHDAY on Wednesday. Enjoy it now because when you get my age, you won't even

remember it. LOL!

Happy Healing,

Dan,

Just hang in there - my recovery seemed to last longer than most and

was longer than I expected as well.

I had upper and lower done in September and the only part up top

that is still numb are my gums and part of my palette on the left

hand side - on the outside nothing is numb expect a portion on my

chin, but you may not have that if you only had upper done. The

numbness for me (on the top half on the outside) wore off at about 4-

6 weeks. The jolts and tingles are a good sign - it means that you

are healing! The more the better although some of them might be

painful. I noticed a major reduction in the swelling after 4 weeks -

I am still a little puffy after 3 months, but not much.
