Thanks Neil. Just wondering why you wouldn't reccomend it and if you

have any side affects still after a year?

I have significant numbness on the right side my lip, chin, and

tongue, and minor numbness on the left side. It's very slowly getting

better, but the slow rate of improvement makes me think it will be

another couple of years before I'm even approaching " normal " , if ever.

The amount of correction I needed (underbite and crossbite) was

fairly minimal compared to many on this board. I needed about 5-6mm

total, so I think I was a borderline case of whether I really needed

surgery.

Functionally, my result isn't quite 100% as my molars on the left

don't chew quite as well as the right side - they just don't meet up

quite as positively or something. And I think I could've used just

about a 1/2 millimeter more setback on the lower jaw as a couple of

my front teeth are almost meeting edge-on instead of overlapping.

My surgery was never about cosmetics, as I was happy with my

appearance and never knew my facial profile was off until the

orthodontist pointed it out to me. But I did have crooked lower teeth

and an edge-on bite that could only be corrected via surgery.

I can't know how much your appearance is affecting you, and I

probably can't truly understand your reasons since I've never been

unhappy with my appearance. If you're willing to trade the risk of

permanent numbness for improved appearance, then your problem must be

significant. Just don't think of this surgery like other cosmetic

procedures where you're in and out with minimal risk, and do realize

that this is an inexact procedure that's not guaranteed 100% success.

I hope I'm not being too negative. I do wish you the best of luck

whatever you choose to do.

HI Kate

I have justed joined this site and had my op in November 2003, am

still wearing the braces and fine tuning, then just found out the

joins of a retainer for the next 12 months, well I have come this

far. I finally decided to have surgery at 30/31 years old after

investigating when I was younger. The surgery and braces are big

things to do and you have to be commited not to be undertaken

lightly. I had an underbite of 7mm which increased to 9mm and am just

getting used to looking in the mirror, but the effect of me and my

profile is so much better. Am still numb in the lower lip and the

chin and praying this will go eventually but I think I can learn to

live with this if I have to, I learnt to live with a difference for

34 years and that has gone now and I wish I had done it sooner but

hopefully I will spend more of my life looking the way I want to than

I have spent wanting to hide my profile from people, hating eating in

public and I may have my hair really short when the braces are off,

the other bonuses are my teeth are going to eventually meet properly

for the first time and the added benefit is I get straight teeth. No

regrets so far and I hope things stay that way.-
