Guest guest
Don't worry. Yes, you probably will be sick to your stomach when you wake up. You will probably throw up a bunch of blood that you swallowed during the surgery. But, you will feel much better once you puke it up. You are a christian, so put yourself in God's hands. He will take care of you. You have nothing to fear. You will be swollen, tired, and life will suck for 6 weeks. But, think of it as a personal challenge. This will be a struggle that you will overcome. One that will build your character. Good luck. > okay, so i've been really cool about this whole ordeal until just > now. i just got back from the ortho to have my surgical hooks put in > and i started to have a panic attack in the chair. luckily, my > orthodontist is great... he's a Christian, as am i, and so it was > good to have him give me some encouragement. > > i'm still just scared out of my wits. how will i feel when i wake > up? will i get sick to my stomach? will the swelling take longer > than normal to go away? will i pass out from lack of sustenance? i > will be wired for six weeks. its just scary all around and any > encouragement i can get from someone whose been through it would > rock. Guest guest
As a post-oper (1 year tomorrow!), I can sympathize with all the " what-ifs " that are running through your head right now. For me, waiting was so much worse than recovering. Keep in mind that you've got a lot of real pros who will be taking care of you. Yes, there is a possibility that you may feel sick to your stomach when you wake up, but there is a difference between " may " and " will " . I didn't feel the least bit sick when I woke up or at any point after that while splinted (six weeks). Even if you do get sick though, the nurses and doctor will take care of you! It sounds like you know how to give your troubles to God, so remember that with this surgery, you not only have Him to give them to, but also to all the medical pros that will be taking care of you. This surgery is something you don't have a lot of control over, so rely on your trust in others. You're are perfectly allowed to do that. Best to you! > okay, so i've been really cool about this whole ordeal until just > now. i just got back from the ortho to have my surgical hooks put in > and i started to have a panic attack in the chair. luckily, my > orthodontist is great... he's a Christian, as am i, and so it was > good to have him give me some encouragement. > > i'm still just scared out of my wits. how will i feel when i wake > up? will i get sick to my stomach? will the swelling take longer > than normal to go away? will i pass out from lack of sustenance? i > will be wired for six weeks. its just scary all around and any > encouragement i can get from someone whose been through it would > rock. Guest guest
thank you! i think that is what i needed to hear. i don't want to go into this thinking it will be a breeze, but i also think that its wrong to expect the worst. what happens, happens... and you're right, i will have experts on hand to help me (and God). > > okay, so i've been really cool about this whole ordeal until just > > now. i just got back from the ortho to have my surgical hooks put > in > > and i started to have a panic attack in the chair. luckily, my > > orthodontist is great... he's a Christian, as am i, and so it was > > good to have him give me some encouragement. > > > > i'm still just scared out of my wits. how will i feel when i wake > > up? will i get sick to my stomach? will the swelling take longer > > than normal to go away? will i pass out from lack of sustenance? > i > > will be wired for six weeks. its just scary all around and any > > encouragement i can get from someone whose been through it would > > rock. Guest guest
It's definitely a scary thing to be going into! I think most of us went through those same feelings before surgery. Although it's not a breeze, it's also far from the worst that you can go through. It's just one of those things that you endure for a little while. You may or may not feel sick when you wake up, but if you do, it won't last. I didn't throw up after surgery but it would have been OK if I had. Do make sure you get plenty of liquids and liquid nutrition (Boost, Ensure, broth) after your sugery to keep your energy up. I got pretty weak but managed to start eating enough to get over that pretty quickly. You'll do fine... hang in there and it will be over before you know it! Guest guest
Absolutely. Imagining what's gonna happen was, for me, far worse than anything that actually did happen. And I wasn't sick at all (I only had lower advancement, though). Remember, too, that you'll be pretty much out of it, at least during the first day or so -- or at least, I was. That mitigates a lot, I suspect. If I were a betting woman, my money would be on the wager that says you'll do just fine! Not without discomfort, swelling, bruising (congestion if you're doing upper) and a generally unpleasant time. But nothing you can't get through. And if you have any worries, don't hesitate to call your surgeon and/or ortho for help. They (and their office staffs) know this stuff inside and out, if they're as good as mine, and are a resource for you. Guest guest
Get the gravol shot when you wake up in recovery I would have puked but.. How about writing down some scriptures about anxiety? Put them in your wallet. Making yourself a nice tape that will keep your spirits up. And remind yourself that your faith as a Christian says this is into god's hands and whatever he wills will happen. This experience is a religious type for everyone. The experience of the surgery, the eating/sucking food. You will be tested in your strength and resolve, you have your faith you should use it to learn from this experience and grow in your particular faith. I totally understand the panic ur going through. I had many the same exact fears a week before surgery. It is so normal what what going through in ur mind right now. As far what will happen when u wake up. I dont know exactly what procedure ur having done. I had lower jaw surgery so I can tell you from my experience There is a decent shot u will be in a lot pain. My Dr told me most people are. In my case it was very temporary. They gave me a pain killer in the recovery room. I woke up a couple of hours later and that was the last any major pain for me. As far as being sick to ur stomach from what I have been told that is also pretty common but also very temporary. I threw up blood. the evening of my surgery. I felt naseau for about two days but never threw up again. They put u on penicillion for a wk after surgery to that can certainly cause naseau but there are medications they can give you for naseau. I think the first night is the worst after surgery and than it does get better. Its difficult to talk not just because ur wired but because everything including ur glands maybe swollen. Don't dispear everthing start to get better by about the third day. Ur swelling starts to go down each day. Talking becomes easier. Everyone is different but within a wk I was taking long walks. Within 2wks ur still swollen but probably not enough to be self conscience in public. Within a month I had no swelling at all. As far as being wired. I am not going sweeten the truth it sucks, but u get used to it. Everything has to go in the blender. Try peanut butter with a lot oil in the blender to make it syrupy. It really help the hunger pangs. You kind of sip stuff through the opening in your teeth. It things get stuck try a water pik on a low speed or a proxy brush to clean ur teeth. As far talking it does become easier. Most people were able to understand me within a couple of days. Dont overdo it cd be a strain to talk. My advice to you is time passes more quickly when ur busy, so try to carry with things u like to do as much as possible and as much as ur up to. Try not to get too frustrated about being wired its a strain but it is temporary. Try to focus on the big picture on how great u will look and function. Keep the faith. I believe in divine intervention, although it is a little bit of a contorversial topic on this site right now. I hope that helps. My prays are with you.
