Guest guest
Hey everyone, I just found this site and it is awesome to find that there are so many people who are or have gone through what I am getting ready to go through. I just had braces put on March 1st (of course, I had them when I was 12 as well) and we are anticipating surgery for sometime in June or July. I have read a lot of your posts, and I was wondering if there is anyone who has had just their lower jaw moved back? I have a class 3 underbite, and they are only moving my bottom jaw back. Part of me is really excited, because I hate looking at my face and am really excited to see change. In fact, my boyfriend is doing a video documentary for me on the before, during and after process. It is pretty cool. Anyways, the other part of me is really scared because I know it is a pretty big procedure and everybody's comments about the long lasting numbness kind of scares me. My other concern is the weight loss. I am 5'10 " 135 lbs, and whenever I tell anybody that I will have my mouth wired shut for 6 weeks, they freak out and tell me I better start fattening up. I think I will be fine though. If anyone is out there who could share their experiences and thoughts, that would be great! Thanks.
Guest guest
Hi! And Welcome. You had braces put on in March, and you're gonna have surgery in June or July? Lucky you! That's close to a record short time, I think. Before you start worrying about being wired, be sure your surgeon does wire people shut after whatever procedure he's doing on you. Some don't. I was neither banded nor wired when I left the hospital after lower advancement. (However, it's good to think ahead, because what happens in the OR can change the plans of any surgeon, I think, and some folks wake up wired without having expected it.) You can get good nutrition, even with a wired mouth. You might check out the Zip N Squeeze site (look on the home page of this group for a link); Beaudette has eating aids, namely the zippies (which some folks love and some folks find useless), a cookbook that has all sorts of most excellent info about recovery in general and recipes in specific, and a jaw wrap which I found awesome. I still use it sometimes. If it is reassuring to you, let me tell you that I never did have any numbness. I'm pretty unusual in that, I think. (I say both my surgeon and I had an excellent morning that day! Thank goodness!) Even those who do have numbness often find that it goes away. I say often because there are indeed exceptions, and it doesn't help when you're the one who's numb, even if everybody else on earth sails through with no problem. There are no guarantees. You just figure out for yourself what the risks are, what the benefits are, and how it all shakes out for you. Good wishes to you, Cammie > Hey everyone, > > I just found this site and it is awesome to find that there are so > many people who are or have gone through what I am getting ready to > go through.
