Tori,

That's a new one to me. Never ever heard of it. What is it exactly,

do you wear it around your neck? How is it suppose to cut down your

surgery time?

Give us some more info.

That is prolly part of it b/c i remember back like last december

they kept talking about tongue thrust. It also puts your lower jaw

in the joint correctly so that when they do the surgery it is a lot

easier. It looks like a retainer its kinda thicker in the front and

it goes in the roof of ur mouth just like a retainer. You put it in

a case just like a retainer and it makes sure ur bottom and top

teeth dont touch. If you weren't having the upper jaw surgery it

wouldn't work for ya i dont believe lol but that is what they

explained to me at the info thing with my surgeon in lansing. You

take it out to eat and brush ur teeth and all but ur supposed to

wear it most of the time. If I remember he is the only or one of

the only people in the U.S. that uses this method. I was just

wondering if neone else had heard of it. I can talk pretty well.

And, for neone that has had the upper jaw surgery where they cut it

from the like skull and move it down, DID YOU NEED A TRANSFUSION OF

YOUR OWN BLOOD?? b/c the red cross ppl called and i have to have it

done in toledo b/c i am using it for me if necessary and i am under

18 so its supposedly special. Just wondering ne responses would be

nice :)

Oh yea it also makes it so that i dont have to be wired or most

likely i wont be banded b/c my jaw has already grown accustomed to

its new position. lol i forgot that part

sounds a lot like a splint to me, but what do I know?

Some folks have indeed needed blood. My surgeon told me I could store

some if I wished, but that he thought it would be wasted. I had only

lower, though.

I lost only about 72 ccs, which is pretty tiny. He's mighty good, as

I've said before. Didn't need any blood at all.

And some folks think that donating can weaken you and make you more

likely to need a refill.

If I were you, I'd do whatever my surgeon advised. Giving a couple of

pints of blood is no big deal, to me, anyhow. I've given gallons,

over the years.

Tori how old are you again?

I haven't heard many people needing a transfusion but if you can do

it but from what I hear do it more than a week before your surgery.

I have seen that deprogrammer, its not terribly unique but I think

alot of people use it outside of braces as the braces should keep

the teeth down, it is nice as you will have freed yourself from the

habit while wearing the braces.

HELLO??? You're having jaw surgery at age 14???

Have you and your parents asked your surgeon many, many questions

about whether you have completed your growth? That is a big,

important thing to know. If you're still growing, the growth spurts

could undo any improvements you get from surgery, best I understand

things. I'm not a doc, not a dentist, not an ortho, not a surgeon,

not even qualified to scrub their floors or clean their bathrooms.

But I urge you strongly to ask, and ask your parents to ask. This is

an important, major component of the whole thing.

I do agree with Cammie,

I had a friend who had a baby at 15 and never grew after.

A large trauma, disease etc that stops nutrition can stop your

growth. Trust me after this I lost most of my hair ;)

Tell your parents to get a pediatrian's advice on it.

Unless you are pretty tall already etc and don't really desire to be

much taller.

The whole problem with this deal is that my upper jaw has stopped

growing. Thats what i have to have the surgery and yeah i am pretty

tall right now i am 5'7.5 " yeah it prolly sounds weird to many ppl

on here but we discussed it with the surgeon for around 3 hrs and he

does many many younger surgeries. He has at least 1 a week that are

ppl under 17. He does around 3 a week every week so i am pretty

sure it will be ok. My ortho and dentist also felt that it was a

good idea. My parents made sure it was all ok b/c my high school

swim season starts in august so i need to get back in the swing of

things by around june so we checked every thing.k My mom asked like

every question in the book lol and i mean EVERYTHING. but thanks

and i do appreciate ur opinions

OH good, five seven is the perfect height for women.

:)

I am also five seven ;)

My daughter will also need surgery sometime in the future she's only

10 now but lost a few baby teeth on lower jaw and has quite the

large overbite. I guess though with the steriods etc...its probably

less trauma than it used to be.

For women growth is pretty definite in its ending time, unlike boys

who can grow until they are 22 or so.

Shiloh

PS let us know how it goes, I am also interested in how you cope

with this with the kids at school. You seem so mature for 14!

*you must have a really great mom ;)

Hi,

Well it does sound like you and your parents and the surgeon have

done some research, but I would like to let you know to be very

careful about having surgery at such a young age. When I was 12 I

began to develop my underbite. At age 14 it was at about 3mm. I was

5 foot 7 " at that age, and the doctors where pretty sure I was done

growing. However, at that time we did not have the money to go ahead

with jaw surgery... And that now is a good thing! I am 21, 5 foot

10 " and my jaw has only grown more since then. It is 7mm now. So if

I had gotten surgery at 14, I would be doing it all over again at

this point. So just be careful. Anyways, I am finally getting

surgery... In about 3-4 months. But good luck. I hope everything is

okay for you. Just don't always take doctors words for solid truth.

If you are able to wait, sometimes it is better.
