I have loss of taste too. I was eating a salad last night that I

really loved before surgery and thought it was absolutely

disgusting. I hope it is all due to the numbness still. My gums

are still basically completely numb and part of the roof of my

mouth. I am just hanging in there. I am also having a problem with

some of my teeth not touching completely (the bite is perfect - but

some teeth aren't completely touching - so chewing is still

difficult as I can't grind into yet). I was thinking about checking

into a speech therapist and having some sessions to get the

exercises that I need to teach my tongue to go into the correct

position again to correct my speech.

Perm wires? What are they used for? Are they really perm. like for

the rest of your life?

Laurie,

I was kinda surprised that my taste was affected - that isn't

something that I remember reading about or was told about. I, like

you, am just hoping that this all wears off - I am thinking that I

might just wait until all of the numbness wears off to decide

whether or not to seek help of a speech therapy. Oh, what only 7

more months until everything should be back to normal (uggh!)

Yeah, good idea - I think the numbness may have a little to do with

it as well as the new jaw positions. I will just hang in there!

For what it's worth -- If you still have a splint, an expander or any

type of gadget in your upper (or maybe your lower, too) that can

affect taste, I've read.

If you still have swelling and/or healing going on in your upper,

sinus cavities, that could be the fault, too.

I never smell anything. Shouldn't be able to taste anything, but

swear that I believe I do. Yes! I can taste the difference between a

potato, an apple and an onion, although I was always taught in

science classes that I couldn't, shouldn't, wouldn't. One reason that

my trust in science is irrational, but remains, sorta like faith.

Good wishes. I think my sense of mouth taste is probably diminished

(I can't tell lamb from roast beef, nor when food is spoilt, nor

spaghetti or bacon burnt, nor when clothes have soured, nor when the

kitty has pooped. Wish I could.) But I live quite nicely without---

God knows what will happen if I ever walk into a house laden with

escaping natural gas. But I reckon I will deal with it, or I won't.

Good luck. The nerves are persistent critters, I think, and I hope

yours will get happy and be lively yet again!
