Inpatient vs Outpatient Question

Hi Group. I'm two weeks postop and beginning to feel better. I'd like

your input on something. My surgery (maxillary and mandibular

osteotomies) was performed as an outpatient surgery and they

literally kicked me out of the recovery room at 5 p.m. I wanted to

stay overnight, but they said I would be fine. The next 24 hours were

hellish for me.

I'm curious as to how long people have stayed in the hospital? Did

you think it was appropriate and beneficial? I realize every case is

individual, but I'd like to get some general ideas. Did anyone else

have an outpatient experience and how did it go?

I had upper/lower/genio and was in hospital from Tuesday am (surgery

that day at 8:30 am), released Thursday am. I was told I wouldn't be

released until I was able to take in enough fluids on my own. I was

on IV for 24 hours, then I blew my IV and they changed me to liquid

meds. I drank, drank, drank as much as possible as soon as I woke up

from surgery (motivated to get out of hospital). I probably could

have gone home the day following, but this length of stay is standard

for my surgeon for double-jaw patients. I really felt fine the moment

I woke up from my surgery. And my husband stayed 24x7 in the hospital

to help with my care. A different experience than yours.

I think it was nasty of your surgeon to do double-jaw surgery as an

outpatient. Before you kick your surgeon's butt (and I'm not advising

that), make sure you are done needing his expertise, though. I'm

happy you're fine.

I stayed over night for 1 night and was giving the opportunity to

stay longer if I choose, but I wanted to get back home. There is no

way that I would have been able to leave that same day. They help

you so much and give you everything to make it easier on you.

You don't say what you had done, and I think that would make a difference, but

here's

my opinion anyway!

I shopped around for a surgeon, and most indicated that 1 jaw = 1 night stay, 2

jaws= 2 night stay. For awhile I didn't think my insurance would pay, and I did

have a

doc who said he could probably get me out same night to save me money, but he

would not promise it. From talking to docs and nurses, it's more about how you

are

doing. Are you drinking enough? Are you peeing on your own? Is your pain and

nausea below a certain level? That kinds of thing.

I had upper and lower and was in hospital two nights. I feel that I would have

been

okay coming home after one, but my poor husband would have suffered for it

because I couldn't take care of myself for about 5 days. I could go to the

bathroom

by myself, but that was about it. He had to feed and water me constantly, and

it wore

him out!

It sounds like you had an unusual doctor, but I can't tell you if he made the

right or

wrong decision. I hope you are more pleased with the rest of his treatment than

you

were about this; if you don't feel comfortable with your doctor I'm sure it

makes this

whole process even harder....

I, too, had upper and lower done about 2 weeks ago and it was done as

outpatient surgery in my oral surgeon's office. I went in around

7:00 a.m. and left his office around 4:30.

When we were planning the surgery, he suggested that I might want to

have it done in the hospital but I (stupidly?) said I preferred to

have it done outpatient so I could sleep in my own bed that night and

have all the comforts of home. If I had to do it over, I would

definitely stay in the hospital. The car ride home was very

difficult and the first night was HORRIBLE for both me and my

caregiver. The only good thing was that I was able to take a lot of

showers to ease my nasal congestion and I'm not sure I could have

done that in the hospital. But it would have been nice to have a

hospital bed that could be elevated as opposed to sleeping on a stack

of propped up pillows.

Having said all of that, there were times during that first night

when I needed someone to help me with something ASAP (usually

involving congestion or pain medicine). My caregiver was great and

slept right by my bedside. But if I'd been in a hospital and had to

rely on a nurse to come when I pressed the call button, I'm not sure

how well that would have worked (based on some past hospital

experiences). So, I guess my recommendation for people considering

this would be to stay in the hospital one night if you're having

upper and lower jaw surgery but also have someone stay there with you

that can be responsive to your needs if a nurse is not available.
