Brad,

I have the jaw spasms also. Don't know what causes them, but mine seem to

come whenever they want to without warning. Most times, I end up biting my

tongue. My next OS appt isn't until 14 Jan, but I will ask then to see if she

knows why. If you find out anything before then, please let me know.

Jaw Spasm?

My wife just had surgery on her upper jaw on 12/24. (Merry Christmas)

Things are going good, but once and a while she complains that her jaw

has a " spasm " and tries to open.

Has anyone experienced this?

It doesn't seem to bother her too much, it's only a few times a day,

if that. We aren't concerned enough to call the doctor; we assume it

is just a side effect and will go away with time. We will mention it

to the doctor during our first post-op visit in a few days.

Any comments are welcomed!

Regards,

Brad

Hey Brad, Smooches,

I'm 10 days postop and have jaw spasms, too. My surgeon said today

that it is just all of the nerves and muscles trying to figure out

where they now live. He said it lasts several weeks. It does feel

strange though, like your face just got this little mind of it's

own! Alix

Hello

I had upper and lower surgery on Dec. 9 and had a few " spasms "

and it would actually hurt a little bit. But since that first week

and a half I have yet to have another. I guess my muscles have

become accustomed to not being moved and they have stopped. So, with

time I would say that they do or will stop.

Hi!

I had jaw surgery on December 10th (upper/lower/genio) and started

getting jaw spasms a few days ago after I had my elastics removed (I

was very tightly banded) It's probably just her muscles getting use

to their new position (or like in my case - getting use to being able

to move a little more now that the elastics are removed) If they

aren't bothering your wife - there's no need to worry. You can always

ask your surgeon about them when you see him/her in a few days like

you mentionned. I only get the muscle spasms when I'm wearing the

elastics. I think it's just my jaw's way of telling me its angry that

I still have to wear an elastic on each side 20 hours per day :)

Happy healing!

I had BSSO/lower jaw adv. in Feb. '03. I too experienced very bad

and painful spasms while my jaw was wired. I was externally wired

for 5 weeks and externally for 7.

My oral surgeon said the same as this post. The muscles were just

reacting to their new position, etc.

Thanx, Alix. That's a BIG relief. I was beginning to think I was starting to

relapse.

  • 2 weeks later...

I knew there was a thread not too long ago about this...

Funnily, I'm now almost 6 weeks post-op and I just started to get

these " spasms " ... about 5 times a day. It's not painful, since I can

now open my mouth almost 28 centimeters and the spasms don't seem to

want to open my mouth further than that. Just surprising. I hope it

doesn't last too long...

I had my splint removed on Wednesday, perhaps it has something to do

with it. That or my 1.5 hour long ortho appointment afterwards...

That hurt! Anybody had spasms after getting your splint removed?

Hi Marlaine!

I got muscle spasms after getting my elastics removed, but they

became less frequent after I got my splint removed and didn't have to

wear any elastics on a regular basis. I guess my jaw just wanted to

move around more freely :)

So how does it feel to have your splint removed? I was so happy when

I had mine removed. I hated that thing :)

Oh, and I think you meant 28 millimeters, not centimeters, because if

you can open your mouth 28 centimeters, I think something is wrong

with your jaw :)

Love always,

Johanne

P.S. Happy belated birthday! :)

Did I say *centimeters*?!

ROTFLOL!!!

And to say that I double-checked that post! :D

Splint out feels great! I can say " s " correctly now... I love

experimenting with food, finding out what I can eat now... And my

teeth look lovely. Although they would be even more so if my braces

would disappear... that would be the next step, but I don't know

when that will be. It appears that a space has formed between two

teeth that wasn't there before. My ortho will try to correct this. I

hope it won't take too long... Can't wait for getting all this junk

out of my mouth!
