Guest guest
Hi Kris, I swallowed a metal bracket type thing with a hook on it back in August or September and my ortho told me not to worry about it. In other words it would come out the natural way. I never had an xray and just forgot about it. I mean if you get an xray & you and the radiologist see it, what are you going to do anyway? Have surgery to remove it? I really don't think it can hurt you and I really do think it will exit on its own.

Guest guest
Hmmm. I had been told that ceramic brackets will not show up on x- rays. I'd address that specific point, either with the ortho or with the radiology people. I may be wrong, my info may be outdated, or whatever. But I'd ask, for sure. I'm also wondering how you managed to lose it, as in out of your mouth completely. Was the archwire not in it? I had one that popped off in the course of surgery, but I didn't even know it was loose until I went back to my ortho, because it was still wired onto the archwire and sitting there. Guest guest
< > I went to brush my teeth, and it was GONE. Don't know when, don't know how. The O ring holding the arch wire to the bracket must have snapped, maybe? As for it not showing up on the x-ray, I mentioned that to the ortho. He said there is a thin band of metal across the center. Like an x-ray would show something that small? If it was standing on end to the machine, it would be a pin prick. I think I'm going to 'forget' to go get this x-ray. Kris > > I lost a ceremic bracket from my braces, and since I don't remember > > spitting it out, I must have swallowed it. Guest guest
I dunno. I would never advise anbody to ignore a doctor's advice, although some do overkill measures to protect themselves legally, I know. I think it probably is likely that the thing either already has passed through your system, or will do so. But I don't want to be the one to suggest that you forget about it, and then hear that you got into trouble because it had lodged somewhere it's not supposed to be... I did, as a child, swallow a Girl Scout pin, with the clasp open, and we were adviced to wait for nature to take its course, which it did. But it involved a lot of unpleasant, um, scrutiny until we found it and knew for sure it had gone all the way through. Of course, a Girl Scout pin is both larger and sharper than a teensy little bracket. Cammie > < mouth completely. >> > > I went to brush my teeth, and it was GONE. Don't know when, don't > know how.
