Guest guest
Hi, . That must have been a disappointment to you. But at least he was honest with you. And you're better off without him. (As I told someone else, you never, ever want a surgeon who is reluctant to do a procedure on you -- or at least that's my opinion.) Try another surgeon. Ask your ortho for another referral (and tell him what this surgeon told you, so he doesn't send anybody else who's over 26 to him!) I can e-mail my surgeon's name to you if you wish, but I think it is unlikely that you're anywhere near south Alabama. And it is much better to have a surgeon who can work closely with your ortho, and is nearby your home, I think. It is not at all unusual for people older than 26 to have this surgery. I don't know what this fellow's hang up is, but I'm living proof that it can be done! So are many others on this site. If you have some other problems with your bones, that may be different ... if they're thin, or fragile or you've had previous breaks or something. But if you have healthy, strong bones, my guys have the saws that can take them apart, and the skills (and screws) to know how to put them back together in a better formation! I know. Good wishes to you. Cammie > Hi Cammie, > I did see the OS today and said that he did not want to work on me. He said that because of my age that my bones would be too hard. He said he didn't do anyone over 25 years of age. He suggested that I go back to the Ortho and that he could pull a couple of teeth and do braces, but my ortho has already said that he did not want to that. I guess they all think I am to old. I will probably talk to the Ortho tomorrow and see what he thinks. I was disappointed. > >
Guest guest
I had no nerve damage at all. That is possible, too, although that was the one question my surgeon asked me right after I came to. You want someone, if you can, who is very, very careful to find and protect the nerve. It is not always possible to do so, and I certainly do not blame the surgeon in cases where some occurs. But the surgery can be done without it, if the configurations are right and if the surgeon is good and careful and lucky and the patient is likewise fortunate. If you feel at ease posting where you live, perhaps someone can recommend a surgeon nearer you. Cammie > Cammie, > Thanks for your advice. If anything changes I will go to the FAQ's site. > Don't worry about being to late with your reply. I wrote my note pretty late in the day to expect on answer and I figured that you would be at work anyway. Fortunately, I am retired so I don't have to worry about that. Aside from worrying about my bones being to hard he also was worried about nerve damage. And I certainly don't want that to happen. He did say that I could look for another doctor that might do it, but according to my ortho they are the best docotrs around here. It too bad that your doctor isn't in my neighborhood. > >
Guest guest
I live in the Quad Cities which consists of cities in Iowa and Illinois. I didn't get to talk to my Ortho today. I thought maybe he would call me, but he didn't. From your other note you asked if I had any other bone problems. I do have some receding gums. There was only one tooth that the Ortho was worried about. I will call my regular dentist also and see if he can recommend a OS. The OS did say that it is very hard to see the nerve. I have always been very lucky with any surgery that I have had and have never had any problems. So I am not really worried about things going wrong. I am also pretty healthy with no serious health problems. I think my husband was relived when he said that he wouldn't do the surgery. He only had a few hours to think about what I wanted to do, as I didn't tell him until I was pretty sure that I would be able to have the surgery (this was what the Ortho told me). And I certainly am going to complain to my Ortho about not knowing that the OS wouldn't work on anybody over 25. It made no sense to go and see someone who wouldn't ever think of doing the surgery and then I get stuck with the consultation fee. I am not sure yet if my insurance will cover that. The ortho does not charge unless you get the braces so that was no problem. Re: Lower Jaw Surgery I had no nerve damage at all. Guest guest
There are definitely BUNCHES of us on this site that are having/have had surgery at over 26. That surgeon sounds a little nutty to me! shazzypup > > Hi Cammie, > > I did see the OS today and said that he did not want to work on > me.
