Guest guest
Hi Family, I've been a lurker since I joined the group a few months ago. I love the positive support and advice that I've found here. I live in NYC and am currently undergoing the pre-op testing to determine whether I am a candidate for WLS. So far I hace completed the blood work, and the abdominal sonogram. I still have to complete the psych, nutritionist and pulmonary tests. I've been investigating WLS for about a year now, and the number one side effect complaint amongst many women seems to be hair loss within the first 3-6 months after surgery. Being vain about my own hair (I know vanity is not a good characteristic, but when you're morbidly obese you try to accentuate your good physical qualities. For me it's my hair.) Anyway, I've found out from various resources that in order to prevent hair loss, we must be on good supplements at least 3 months before surgery. So for all of you pre-ops out there, start taking hair supplements NOW. I'm taking Hairtopia hair vitamins now and I can see an improvement in my hair already. I must stress that I have not had surgery yet, and this is just my opinion but I hope it helps someone. As for the post-ops, I've read that you won't go bald and the shedding will stop somewhere around the 9th month. I've read that Nioxin is a good shampoo to use and that hair vitamins like Hairtopia and hairformula 47 will improve growth and texture. Sorry this post is so long. Blessings to all where ever you are in your WLS journey. Cher

Guest guest
Jess, Rapid weight loss of any kind has several side effects including but not limited to hair loss, stinky breath, and severe body odor. It happens because your body is not getting the nutrients it needs to maintain its current status. Hope this helps! Re: Hair Loss I have a question...................... Guest guest
Funny you asked...... I thought maybe I was imagining it, but at about 4 mos post op (I'm 6 mos now), I noticed that a lot of hair would come out in the shower...more than normal. The only thing I can think of is it is due to all the chemical changes our bodies went through (anethesia/steroids) and also all the energy our bodies were focusing on in the healing process. I can equate this with after having my children....about 2 mos after they were born, I lost a lot of hair...but that didn't last long either.....just our bodies regrouping! Guest guest
Yes, i lost hair.. it was rather weird.when i came out of surgery i was like ohh damn, i have a big zit on my head or thats what it felt like anyway.. well i looked in the mirror, it wasnt a zit.. it was almost like a burn about the size of a quarter. it was on my forehead right dead in the center of my bangs.. i grew out my bangs because of this.. i like that change too hehe..but anyway, my hair didnt grow back in that place until like 6 months post op. it was a dry, red, itchy but owwie - sore. then on the back of my head.. like 3 inches up from my neck, and over to the left, there was another spot without ANY hair.. it was so soft and squishy. it felt really weird. the surgeon looked at them and said he wasnt sure what it was from but possibly tubes laying over my face for so many hours (8.5) and the constant moving of them working on me could have rubbed it off of my head.. and he also said that sometimes nerve endings can kind of have this little " fire " he said he has never seen it before so i dont think that its common.. hes an old surgeon who came to olympia from boston.. and was in an original clinic over there.. SOO i dont think that this will happen to you, dont get nervous:). and yea i was " shedding " really bad after my surgery as well. > Any one have any type of hair loss post op?
