HEADLINE: Medieval warriors fight for cystic fibrosis cure

BYLINE: By DAVID DISHNEAU, Associated Press Writer

DATELINE: HAGERSTOWN, Md.

BODY:

Medieval warriors from across the country are gathering this weekend near

Hagerstown to fight for a cystic fibrosis cure.

The Saturday fund-raiser was organized by Dunbar, a Frederick

woman

whose illness limits her participation in - but not her enthusiasm for - an

international role-playing game called Amtgard. Unable to wield a sword or

staff

in mock combat, she figured she could still raise money for cystic fibrosis

research by organizing a Battle for the Cure.

As of Thursday, 148 people from 15 states had registered, and Dunbar said

she

expected 50 more to show up for the event at the Ruritan grounds in

Huyett, three miles west of Hagerstown. She hopes to raise $3,000 through

contestant entry fees and other donations.

" Oh, my goodness, " the 25-year-old former preschool teacher said. " I'm so

surprised. I didn't expect such a big turnout. "

The visitors include Chellie Young, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, who battles

with

padded sword and shield as Lady e. Her faction, the Querna Tema -

Elvish

for " shifting seasons, " is based in Omaha, Neb.

" I wanted to show some support for this cause. I think this is a very

worthwhile effort, " Young said.

A self-employed saleswoman for screen-printed T-shirts and credit card

processing equipment, Young said Amtgard players often journey afar,

including

to the annual Gathering of the Clans, held a month ago near Albuquerque,

N.M.

" Travel is fairly common but this is something special, " Young said.

Dunbar said the Battle for the Cure will be the largest Amtgard event

this

year on the East Coast. She and her husband, , belong to the Barony of

Crystal Groves, a group of about 20 who meet most Sunday afternoons at City

Park

in Hagerstown to compete in garbed swordplay, archery and jugging (a form

of

football), and share food and fellowship.

Amtgard, the name of a mythical land between heaven and earth in Norse

mythology, has kingdoms, duchies, baronies and shires across the United

States

and around the world, according to the group's World Wide Web site,

http://www.amtgard.com.

Cystic fibrosis is a congenital disease that causes the body to produce a

thick, sticky mucus that leads to chronic, life-threatening infections and

impairs digestion.

BODY:

Don McLean, singing his American Pie, may be the headliner tonight at

Fraze

Pavilion, but take my word for it, Roth will get the crowd thoroughly

warmed up with his thrilling rendition of the American Trilogy made so

famous by

Elvis in the 1970s.

I have known , who is 34 and lives in Clayton, for about 10 years. He

has

an incredible baritone voice with a wide range, and can sing anything from

opera

to rock to country and western.

He has been on the verge of national discovery and a major recording

contract

a number of times, and in each case, at the last moment, it fell through.

" But at this stage in my life, I feel there is a reason for everything, "

he

said. " I think that I have achieved my goal - which is to sing when I want

to,

and to use my talents to entertain and help others. You really don't need

fame

or money or attention when you are happy and healthy. "

When I first met and invited him to appear on my television and

radio

programs, it was in the early 1990s after he competed in a television

competition in Nashville, Tenn., called Be a Star. He was one of the top

winners

in the program, which was like a country-western version of the American

Idol

program.

While attending Beavercreek High School he had the lead in two school

musicals, Fame and Hello Dolly and later he took five years of vocal

training at

State University where he earned a degree in communications.

As he pursued a singing career, and honed his talents, he settled in to

make

a living and raise his family in a more conventional way. " I am a realist

and I

needed to pay bills and take care of commitments as I continued to do as

much

singing as I could. "

He took a job with National City Bank where he has worked his way up to

the

position of assistant vice president. and his wife, , have two

children, , 10, and , 5. He coaches soccer and basketball for his

children's teams at Precious Blood School.

" I perform at the Grand Casino in Rising Sun, Ind., " said.

" And

I am eager to sing at any time to help with a good cause. That's why I look

forward to performing tonight for Condit and the good folks raising

money

in the fight against Cystic Fibrosis. "

Condit, on the sales staff at WHIO-TV and a former television sports

anchorman, is an official with the Cystic Fibrosis foundation and has

sponsored

a fund-raising event at the Fraze now for five years. In addition to Don

McLean

and Roth, tonight's show will feature local media personalities in a

karaoke-style singing demonstration.

Among those performing will be Don Brown, sports director at WKEF-TV,

Channel

22, who is also gearing up for his annual role as emcee of the Jerry

Muscular Dystrophy telethon Labor Day weekend, and Jim Bucher, a television

personality at WDTN-TV, Channel 2. Jeff s of WMMX-FM radio and Butch

Brown

and his wife, , of the Clear Channel radio stations also will

appear.

It all begins at 7 p.m., and tickets are available at the Fraze box

office

and all Ticketmaster locations.

After three years of supporting the fund-raiser, has accepted a

position

on the board of directors of the Cystic Fibrosis foundation. " I was raised

with

the philosophy that it is important to help others and to treat people with

respect and compassion, " he said. " I can help by being on the board, and I

can

hopefully help by singing my heart out at tonight's event. "

HEADLINE: EAGLES HEAD FOR THE COAST ON THE PIER: Downing, aged 43

(front,

Skegness in 11 hours

BODY:

MEMBERS of a Coventry Sunday league football club clocked up more than

pounds 2,300 for charity by cycling from their ground to the coast.

The 17-strong team from Golden Eagle FC completed the journey from Howat

Road, Keresley End, to Skegness, Lincolnshire, in just under 11 hours.

They hope it will net pounds 3,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust when

all

the sponsorship money has been collected.

Downing, aged 43, was the only one to cycle all 118 miles. The

others

rode in relay, resting in a van behind when not cycling.

The group organised the ride because they wanted to do something for

charity. They set off at 6.30am on August 17 and arrived on Skegness Pier

at

5.15pm.

Sid Deans, a former committee member whose 17-year-old daughter has

cystic

fibrosis, said the journey had been hard work.

Sid, aged 42, said: " It's a fantastic effort from all of the lads. I

rode

with them and I realise how out of shape we probably are! But the support

and

encouragement from the rest of the lads kept everyone going. "

HEADLINE: BIG BROTHER'S BIGGEST DIVE;

BODY:

CRAIG , the original Big Brother winner, yesterday joined a mass

attempt to set a new sky-diving record for charity.

Craig and 243 other people took turns to jump out of a plane at 10,000

ft in

a bid to carry out the most tandem parachute jumps ever in 12 hours.

Organisers of the event, staged at a sky-diving centre in

Hinton-in-theHedges, Northants, hope to raise pounds 90,000 for the Cystic

Fibrosis Trust.

Craig, now a DIY expert on BBC's Housecall, jumped with the programme's

presenter Kate Silverton, 32, and GMTV presenter McLean.

Craig, 30, has campaigned to raise money for dozens of charities since

giving his pounds 70,000 Big Brother prize money to a friend and Down's

Syndrome

sufferer for a life-saving operation.

Craig, of Newport, Shropshire, said: " It was quite scary initially. Kate

was

squealing a little bit.

" Once the door is open you can feel the suction. But you are strapped to

an

instructor and he takes the last step out. "

He added: " Whenever I get the odd day off from filming, I try to

dedicate it

to as many charities as possible. "

The existing record is 80 jumps in one day, but organisers hope the

Guinness

Book of Records will verify their achievement within days.
