Guest guest
Hello My dad is 80 years old -- suffered a terrible bout of acute pancreatitis 6 weeks ago. Almost died -- but is starting to recuperate. Cause of attack? Unknown. Doesn't drink. Had hip replacement one week prior to attack (yes, that was a fun combination)-- possibly that set it off. But MD's say they really don't know why this happened. Question: He's been on naso gastric tube feeding for about 2 and a half weeks. Started oral foods with the TF about 2 weeks ago. Nausea is the big problem. Last evening the NG tube fell out. Still has nausea. Any suggestions on meds/etc to reduce the nausea? Phenergan had been ordered -- however, he said that made him feel worse. Now on Compazine -- but first dose hasn't really done anything for him. Does nausea associated with pancreatitis not respond to meds? Any suggestions? If he doesn't eat I'm afraid they'll put the tube back in -- he's already battling depression -- hoping to avoid the tube. Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions. Guest guest
Bev, Have they tried Reglan? Phenergan has no effect on my and I'm not sure about Compazine because they haven't given me that yet. Another possible med is Zoloft. If you are will to try alternative methods, Ginger has been known to be a very effective one to take. Just buy some ginger root, clean it and then cut off a thin slice and suck on it it. Also has been known to help in different states, like Ginger candy, pickled ginger(typically used with sushi) and even Ginger Snap cookies. A few have also taken it in pill form and found it to work (usually avialable in health food stores or vitamin stores). -- Kimber Vallejo, CA hominid2@... Guest guest
Sometimes the nausea is more debilitating than the pain is! I know in my own case, sometimes the nausea lasts for weeks and weeks but I do not hurt! I know there is a drug called Zofran that they use for nausea for cancer patients. It has no side effects. But, the problem is it is not affordable unless you have insurance to cover it. I know the pills I have just for one month are $2200 dollars! But I have a 30 dollar copay and that is it. I cannot even imagine over two-thousand a month for this stuff. If he is in the hospital still, they could give it injectable form I think and Medicare would cover it. Maybe that is an option to check into. Sometimes the nausea takes awhile to respond. Its miserable I k now. Maybeyou might want to ask the docs about the Zofran for nausea. So I've been taking Zofran round-the-clock for several years. It's done the trick for me. And it doesn't cause drowsiness as does Compazine which is often prescriber as a sleep aid. -Ellen > Pancreatitis Association, International

Guest guest
Thank you!!! We are going to set up a " nausea " scale with him and rate how he responds to different items Bev Re: Post pancreatitis nausea -- help! Hi Bev, I tried Compozine and it didnt work at all for me.
