Here's what I got from cosmeticscop.com...note the citric acid reference. Hope this helps. AHAs. Ingredients extracted from various plant sources or milk. However, 99% of the AHAs used in cosmetics are synthetically derived. In low concentrations (less than 3%) these work as water-binding agents. At over 4% and in a pH of 3 to 4, these can exfoliate skin cells by breaking down the substance in skin that holds skin cells together. The most effective and well-researched AHAs are glycolic acid and lactic acid. Malic acid, citric acid, and tartaric acid may also be effective but are considered less stable and less skin friendly. AHAs may irritate mucous membranes and cause irritation. See also BHA. So I looked up BHA. Salicylic acid, which is a beta hydroxy acid, would never show up as BHA. Cosmetics cop quote " Because BHA is related to aspirin (both are salicylates), it retains some of aspirin’s anti-inflammatory properties. In this regard BHA is anecdotally considered a good option for those with rosacea.
