Guest guest Posted August 16, 2002 Report Share Posted August 16, 2002 Good Evening All, I hope everyone is having a pain free evening. I'm feeling better now with the help of stronger pain meds. The Dr. who was on call last weekend when I was in the hospital prescribed some time release morphine to use when the pain becomes chronic for a couple of days with minimal relief from the percocet or vicodin. This man is my Savior!!!! Anyway, I saw the surgeon today and he isn't very keen on doing the surgery of just draining the cyst. He is more prone to the peustow procedure which I am not willing to have at this point as I am hoping to have the islet cell transplant done. He suggests very strongly that I have an ERCP with a stent placement. I know several of you have had this done and was wondering what success/failure rate this group has. I realize everyone is different yet my mom & I are not very willing to shell out $$ for something that doesn't have a very good success rate. I still feel pretty yucky and am having more panc pain than I did before the ERCP. But there are people that I have talked to that have had good luck with the stents. (I think it just stirred things up too much and it ticked my already cranky pancreas right the heck off.) I hope that if you do have this procedure it will help you. On a more personal note... why are you paying cash for the treatments? Do you not have insurance or medicaid?? If you don't have insurance you should apply for some form of medical assistance. And I had a series of them. In fact, I only got worse with each procedure. Those procedures were done at a few hospitals including Beth Israel North in New York City (Dr. Jerome Siegel) and s Hopkins (Dr. Kalloo. And they are world reknowned endoscopists. In the state of Louisiana if you do not make $545 a month (the SSI max) you are not eligeable. Crazy....if you are completely destitute you are not qualified for any type of assistance...not even food stamps...you have to be receiving $$ from somewhere. My SS is on appeal right now and my attorney said it would take 4-6 months to get a hearing. So until then I am SOL as far as any type of insurance. By the time I get my SSD I will be getting Medicare within the month. I am still undecided on having the stent put in. I know I can't handle any more pain than what I have been experiencing. That's why I've decided to never return to the ER at East Jefferson. I spent no less than 4 1/2 hours each time I went there in the past 2 1/2 weeks. Then I didn't even get pain meds once and the other time I got 1/4 of the normal dose that I get of demerol. Hope you are feeling better. You are in my prayers. Guest guest Posted August 17, 2002 Report Share Posted August 17, 2002 , Have you asked the hospital you go to for treatment about the Hill Burton Act that Mark Armstrong has mentioned in his posts a few times? If nothing else maybe they can speed up the process for you. I hope you are feeling better too, I am still in pain, but not as much as yesterday...so far.
