Dear Rose,

The only " shockwave " treatment I've ever heard of is

known as an ECT(Electroconvulsive therapy). It's given

to people who suffer from major depression when

antidepression medications are ineffective.

Have you been on antidepressants? Perhaps you seem so

depressed to your doctor that he thought the treatment

might help you. If the doc metions it again, ask him

why he would suggest such a drastic procedure.

I had five ECT treatments about 2 years ago. I lost

most of my memory for about three weeks; I didn't even

know who I was sometimes, and it took months to get

all of my memory back. Ususally they give you six to

ten treatments about three days apart. I only tried it

out of shear desperation and didn't get any long term

benefit from it. For the most part it's a safe and

often effective treatment for depression. But I

wouldn't reccomend it unless you've gone through all

of the different medications. They tell me that they

have solved the memory side affects by only doing it

on one side of the brain. If you are taking

antidepressants and are not getting relief, it is an

option to consider, but it is certainly not a panacea

and is definately not for everyone so don't even

consider it until you've gotten several opinions for

people you trust.

Hope your having a painfree day.

Yours truely,

Mark
