Guest guest
Hello, Hope things are ok for everyone! I was wondering if any one had any tips on getting a 2 year old (well 23 mnths) to eat.Sonny`s eating habits are gradually becoming worse, the only thing I seem to be able to get him to eat at the moment are french fries and chicken nuggets. Although I should be grateful for small mercies such as Mcs, nutrionally they leave a lot to be desired. At Sonny`s last clinic visit everything went well, he`s growing and physically doing pretty well apart from losing 5 ounces which I know isn`t too bad at all really. However the problem is worsening sometimes I`m lucky to get him to eat one meal a day, and he only takes small amounts of peadiasure milk shakes. I am trying not to make too much of an issue about meals but it is rather frustrating when most of the food I am preparing is going in the dust bin. Everyone keeps telling me that this is normal for someone of Sonny`s age, but the fact our dietician is always tring to find ways of getting more calories into Sonny, it just reinforces just how little Sonny is eating at the moment. Has anyone out there experienced this and got any tips? Is this likley to be just another phase that toddlers go through? I am a first time Mum, and any info on this would be most appreciated. I`ll thankyou in advance. Jackie Mum to Sonny 23 months old w/cf and a will as strong as iron at the moment. Ha Ha Ha yet another phase? _________________________________________________________________ Join the world’s largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com
Guest guest
One tip - have him 'help' make some of his meals. He may very well do some 'tasting' or snacking as he helps prepare. He can help measure and pour into a pot or bowl, help hold a beater, decorate the food, sprinkle parsley on the potatoes, tear up lettuce for salad, chop pieces of banana (doesn't require a very sharp knife) into a fruit salad or into a small bowl of peanut butter and stir. Let him arrange food on a plate into a happy face or other design, then have fun talking about 'eating the nose', etc. Mashed potatoes ALWAYS deserve a happy face of peas or carrots, etc. ! Spread peanut butter or soft cheese on a banana split lengthwise and let Sonny put 'frogs on the log' (chocolate chips or raisins or craisins, fruit loop or cheerios cereal, or small pieces of vegetable). Of course, the frogs are going to jump off into his mouth or he is going to sneak up on them and take a bite oout of the log! It is amazing what concoctions kids sometimes eat, if allowed to be creative in preparation. If he is drinking pediasure milkshakes, let him choose and stir in colourings or flavourings - sometimes they will drink more just for the fun of making it. If having cereals, let him choose to mix more than one kind together (limmit the choices to two out of three or four at this age so decision-making doesn't get overwhelming). The tough goal is to keep food fun instead of a battle. good Luck. M Eating I was wondering if any one had any tips on getting a 2 year old (well 23 mnths) to eat. Guest guest
Some other calorie enhancers that we use are: - " fun " high fat foods such as stringable cheese sticks, frozen yogurt tubes, minigo (flavoured cheese) -fruit dips: slice up fruit (apples etc) and let the toddler dip them in whipping cream. Mix flavoured yogurt into the whipping cream to change flavour and add fat. -fruit/veggie spread: peanut butter or almond butter or hazelnut chocolate on celery, apples, pears etc -extra tablespoon of butter melted on everything esp. spaghetti and interesting shaped pastas. - sausages, sausages, sausages. " Toad-in-the-Hole " is a weekly fatty favorite here. -my all time favorite - serve breakfast cereal with un-whipped whipping cream instead of milk. All the best, Jane
Guest guest
Hi all, Other fun things to try with small people: Getting them to mix brown sugar into sour cream for dipping fruit into. Them spreading their own toppings on home made pizza (and letting them taste test on the way). Using non-whipped whippable cream on porridge with lots of brown sugar. Using cream instead of milk in scrambled eggs/french toast (get them to do the scrambling). French toast with crispy bacon and maple syrup. (YUUUMMM!!!) Potato, pumpkin and sweet potato wedges, oven baked, with sour cream and/or salsa for dunking. (Anyone else seeing a whipping/dunking theme happening here?) If you have access to an icecream maker - home made icecream with lots of fruit/yoghurt/creamy goodness.... BTW - Sian actually ate all her dinner tonight: 1 piece deep fried fish, 1 meat dim sim and a handful of chips. For afternoon tea, a bowl of icecream and stacks of popcorn. Breakfast was a mouthful of porridge, and I haven't looked to see whether she ate what I sent to school. Can you tell I'm as sick as a dog with a nasty viral infection & have no energy at all? Love to you all, Mum to Cate 9yrs wocf and Sian 5yrs wcf Canberra Australia
