Guest guest
Dear Sheila, Can't resist adding to your many replies on this topic. Why do so many of us like talking about this subject? Quite core to making us feel all right. Kurt Vonnegut goes on about it at length in his novels. ( A side story---my Canadian great-grandfather's advice to his son as he went off to WWI is supposed to have been 'Keep your mind clean and your bowels open.') Anyway-when I was in hospital, they offered me both senacot and lactulose, which I turned to down, I think because I feared 'a rush call' that I wouldn't be able to answer physically. DO NOT TURN DOWN THE OFFER OF LAXATIVES! Like someone else who has written here, I also got bunged up, and needed (blush) manual help from a kind kind nurse who said she had worked for years on the spinal injury unit, so was used to doing this for everyone there. Aren't we lucky we are not in the spinal unit. One piece of information I did find useful was the distinction between senna and lactalose. They explained that senna acts like a piston-helps propel things out. While lactalose is a bowel softener (someone mentioned another brand name) so things slide out more easily. I prefered the latter, but you can use both. Eleanor constipation Hi all, I wondered if any one had any suggestions for constipation whilst on strong painkillers in hospital as I am due to have RBHR in April. This has been quite bad when I had my previous ops. This now seems to be my worse memory so far as I mentally prepare myself again. Thanks in anticipation Sheila. Guest guest
Hi Eleanor, thank you for your reply, I will definetly accept any form of help. What I have to remember is to accept it very early on. It was only two days in hospital last time before I was in agony, for a least 2 1/2 hours. I likened it to child labour, but as I said at the time I gave birth 1 1/2 hours quicker. lol It does seem a bit silly that this is one of my main concerns about having a second resurf. but it is good to get a lot of advice from this group. We are very lucky to have it. Thanks, Sheila. In surfacehippy , " eleanor " wrote: > Dear Sheila, > > Can't resist adding to your many replies on this topic. My 15 month old has been on SCD for about 2 and 1/2 weeks and I'm happy to say her appetite is really growing!!!!!!!!!! I am so grateful. However, she is definitely getting constipated--is that die off? She is on 600 mg of magnesium glycinate and still struggling--her belly is all distended, should we switch to magnesium citrate?? Is is the same dosing? She is also on vitamin c--about 4200mg/day, that's a lot right? I was thinking of trying grapefruit seed extract again--we had good luck with that in the past. Any advice? Guest guest
hi i know this is probably a daftish type question... using prunes for constipation - can you substitute this with figs or dates? id like to give the more natural approach a try as opposed to liquid paraffin - obviously if it was effective its another form of calories but i have tried prunes before and neither were all that keen but kai and fian have both enjoyed figs and dates... thank you emma --------------------------------- To help you stay safe and secure online, we've developed the all new Yahoo! Figs do contain seeds and may irritate. Prunes rank highest in fiber content. Medjool dates are very sweet but I often have several every day. There is a wonderful SCD dessert, Sue's Fourteen Date Cake which uses soaked dates: http://uclbs.org/recipes/desserts/sue14datecake.php Have you tried stewing prunes, making them into a puree and combining them with yogurt? Guest guest
Hi Emma, > i know this is probably a daftish type question... > > using prunes for constipation - can you substitute this with figs or dates? The prunes are useful for constipation because of the high levels of natural sorbitol and high levels of both kinds of fiber. Figs and dates have high fiber but I don't know how much sorbitol. They are all pretty sweet, so go carefully because of your yeast issues. Sheila
Guest guest
Hi Emma, If using prunes for constipation you don't need to peel them but they do need to be simmered in water until soft.
